I led the Bureau of Meteorology's research program since late 2009. I have instigated and overseen major projects that have fundamentally improved Bureau services for the benefits of all of our customers. the As a part of this responsibility, I was Deputy Director of CAWCR from 2009 to 1016. As such, I have been responsible for the development, management and delivery of the Bureau's R&D program. Strategic planning and management are pivotal as has been the management of more than 120 staff. In this role I have influenced the Bureau’s science directions and have provided guidance and advice in policy areas, and the observation program. I represent the Bureau on several national and international bodies. I was a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the National Marine Facility Future Research Vessel project, the Steering committee for the National Environmental Science Program Earth System Science and Climate Change Hub, the Advisory Board for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science. I a member of the World Metrological Organisation (WMO) Commission for Atmospheric Sciences Management Committee that oversees international research coordination and prioritization. My research interests are focused around radar meteorology using wind profiler radar and polarimetric for weather and climate applications. I have published more than 115 papers in the peer reviewed literature with a total of more than 4500 citations. This has included a wide range of activities from basic signal processing to methodologies for the retrieval of cloud microphysics and the application of these techniques to the study of convective dynamics and the impact of convective clouds on the environment. I was the co-lead scientist for the TWPICE experiment. This work has contributed to our fundamental understanding of cloud systems, the use of advanced radar and has had significant operational outcomes.
