Starting as a technician in manufacturing, I took advantage of opportunities to progress through roles in product assurance and hardware engineering before jumping into software. Having learned how computers worked, naturally the next step was to learn how to make them work.Enjoyed working in a small IT department and having responsibility for all things IT. LAMP environment, Linux administrator, MySQL database administrator, Apache web admin, Perl developer. Server installation and maintenance including network, switches and routers. From installing the hardware and the virtualization software base, to creating virtual servers from scratch or backup. Monitoring and keeping them up 24x7. Okay, at a certain point alarms at two in the morning cease being enjoyable. More enjoyable was becoming familiar with Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl. Configuring, operating, backing up, and sometimes recovering. Diagnosing SQL injection and denial of service attacks and implementing preventative measures. Designing multiple-level backup and restore procedures: complete images; system; and purely data, including full database.Application development was a challenging and rewarding part of the IT work. Became very familiar with Perl, the power of RegEx, database interface. Also PHP and Python. Web front-end, very challenging and rewarding. CGI, html, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX. Back-end, generating reports, importing and exporting data files, collecting stats.Office IT support. PC's, laptops, printers, network, file server, PBX & phones. Ghosting, replacing hard drives, RAM. Anti-virus, user accounts, VPN access, shared files. Also replacing light bulbs and the occasional plumbing job :-)
