I completed my residency in internal medicine in 1990, and a fellowship in general internal medicine and clinical epidemiology in 1992. I worked as the medical director of the Berkeley Primary Care Access Clinic, a federally qualified health center caring for the underserved population of Berkeley, California from 1993 to 2001. I worked as a hospitalist for 25 years at Alta Bates Summit Health Center in Berkeley and Oakland California for 25 years, part time from 1993 to 2001, and full time from 2001 to 2018. My professional interests have included hospital-based medical care, medical care of the underserved, palliative and end-of life care, and medical group growth and leadership. I served on the board of directors of my multispecialty medical group in California for 9 years, through 2018, and as director of recruitment helped grow the group from 45 to almost 350 clinicians. In October 2018, I left my group to move from California to Minnesota, and to join my brother Dr. Dave Schultz at Nura Precision Pain Management, a multidisciplinary pain clinic in the Twin Cities.
