If you are interested in helping military families in New England and beyond, please consider supporting Blue Star Families, a military non-profit that is opening a New England chapter in Boston, https://bluestarfam.org (I am a member of its advisory board). BSF helps families that are redeployed settle in their new communities with special welcome events, job resources for spouses, counseling and other important services.BSF’s research finds that only 30% of redeployed military families feel welcome in their new communities--a statistic I found shocking. This threatens military recruitment, reenlistment and the all-volunteer military, and thus makes it a national security issue. Deployments often involve spouses, children or significant others, and if they aren't happy, keeping the active duty spouse from leaving his or her service becomes much harder. This situation also hurts the economy, as many military members get important job training during their service, such as computer programming and logistics, that helps companies hire well-trained workers when enlisted members leave military service—if they don’t stay in the military, they don’t get this important experience. BSF also does important work on food insecurity and race relations in the military. In 2022, philanthropist Mackenzie Scott awarded Blue Star Families a $10 million donation, unsolicited. We are working now to find local donors to help stand up the new New England chapter, which needs seed capital of about $1 million over three years, or about $300,000 a year to scale up. I know there are a lot of military nonprofits and that you get a lot of requests, but this organization is doing something unique from other military support nonprofits: helping to make sure redeployed families are welcomed in their new communities and to support military spouses. If this is a good fit with your charitable giving, we would like the opportunity to brief you further on BSF’s activities. Thank you.
