I’ve always been a dreamer. As a kid, I loved nerding out with Sci-Fi books or comics. These stories were compelling to me because they often described a future filled with fantastical modern cities, electronic devices, robots, computers, and vehicles.My teenage mind didn’t take to math though, preventing admission to a computer science or engineering program. Instead, I took English in university. If I couldn’t build the hardware of the future, I could at least tell its story. I went on to study technical writing because I wanted to be able to tell the story of the future in many different ways- in text, in presentations, in images or videos, in graphs, and through social media which blends these modes.But don’t be confused by my use of the term story. Stories are not just fictions. Stories are also the “influences” that tell us what we think we want, how we think we should look, how we think we should feel, and all kinds of other ideas we tend to think we came up with ourselves. Shaping the future by creating communication products that help users to act, that’s my thing. Whether it’s authoring user-friendly manuals or bullet proof standards of practice, preparing compelling presentations, or managing smooth organizational change (just to name a few!) I’m up for it.Interesting little fact to know about me? I’m a stranger magnet. On public transit or at the mall, pretty much anywhere, random people are comfortable approaching me. Even if there are lots of other people around, I’m the person that strangers are comfortable asking for directions, or with random questions, even just to chat! It’s my weird little superpower.
