Peter Barrett M.Eng, is Director of nCounters Engineering Rehabilitation, holds a Bachelor of Science (Major; Physiology) and develops, designs and builds innovative electronic devices for collecting data and providing biofeedback on gait, balance, sit to stand and joint movement for patients who have suffered an acquired brain injury, following orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation for neurological conditions. These TGA Approved devices are programmed for ease of use with built in help touch screens. In all cases data is transferred wirelessly to ensure patient safety. Our biofeedback devices can store and display data in real time so as to monitor the patient’s overall progress.Giving patients feedback on a specific activity has been shown to hasten their recovery from an acquired brain injury or from major orthopaedic surgery such as hip / knee replacement where correct partial weight bearing is essential.Rehabilitation engineering is just an emerging profession. Peter gives talks about how rehabilitation engineers as part of a multi discipline team can improve outcomes for patients. The most recent was to Biomedical Engineering students at the University of Melbourne.

Equipped with ZigBee, for patient safety. • Intelligent Force Cane (walking cane) to assist with gait retraining while optimising walking function, speed and safety. The cane gives visual and vibration feedback and appropriate for neurological and orthopaedic conditions.• Joint Angle Sensor – this is a portable device that can facilitate functional training and improved joint control in various positions. Easy to set up for elbow, hip and knees.• Essential Seating Sensor unit is a portable, easy to set up, simple and efficient to use daily during rehabilitation. The sensor gives immediate audio and visual feedback on seating posture and seated weight shift for patients with an acquired brain injury.• Data Logger – The data logger is a portable device that provides reliable, accurate and objective data on balance and weight bearing during gait, standing, sit to stand and reaching activities. Ultra-thin weight sensing heel and forefoot pads. Once the patient commences walking, weight bearing data will be automatically recorded for an extended measuring time. Achievements:• Real time audio and visual feedback on the devices.• Gait analysis software developed to contain key temporal gait measures worked out automatically. Key gait parameters are Swing time, Stance time, Stride time, Step time, Cadence steps / min, %Stance time, %Swing time, %Double support time.• International Patent on the PLLM_Touch Unit • Authored Publications Invited speaker at Emerging Sensor Technologies 2018 at RMIT University Show less -
