  • Tal Life
    Chief Corporate Governance Officer
    Tal Life Jan 2007 - Apr 2014
    Sydney, Nsw 2000
In this role I established the governance framework for a newly-listed insurance company (formerly Tower Life, now TAL Life, a fully owned subsidiary of Dai-Ichi Life). Reporting to the Managing Director, I had the following functions reporting to me: General Counsel, Risk Management including Business Continuity, Company Secretary (supporting numerous companies and regulated by APRA and ASIC), Compliance, Office of the Trustee, and Internal Audit. During this period we sustained negligible compliance breaches within a highly regulated industry, across our entire sales network and distribution channels of life insurance and investment products. I chaired the liaison committee with parent company Dai-Ichi Life through the incremental acquisition of TAL through a highly regulated process.I also contributed to acquisition strategy, ensuring the entities acquired were able to reach the same standard as TAL in regulatory compliance. A highlight of the role was acting as TAL representative on the Board of the United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI): Principles of Sustainable Insurance. This board represents 28% of global written premium. I was responsible for establishing the board’s governance and antitrust framework.Another highlight was leading TAL to become the first Australian financial institution to produce a report against the Global Reporting Initiative G4 sustainability reporting guidelines.
  • Abbott Tout Lawyers
    Managing Partner
    Abbott Tout Lawyers 2004 - 2006
    Sydney, Australia
I was engaged as the first outside appointment of managing partner in over 100 years. With oversight of 30 partners and 109 lawyers nationally, I focused on moving away from the traditional insurance law firm model to a model with a stronger, longer-term outlook.
  • Coudert Brothers
    Partner
    Coudert Brothers 1992 - 2002
    Sydney, Australia
Coudert Brothers was the oldest international law firm in the world before its dissolution in 2006. I was Managing Partner of the Sydney Office, and Liaison Partner for the Asian (non-China) practice (Bangkok, Singapore and Jakarta offices). In addition to acting on numerous high-profile transactions in Australia, Indonesia, Fiji and the Philippines, I initiated and drove a merger with local firm Norton Smith with the approval of 50 partners.
  • Baker & Mckenzie
    Capital Partner
    Baker & Mckenzie 1983 - 1992
    Sydney, Australia
Baker & McKenzie was the largest firm in the world at this time. I became a partner in the Sydney office at the age of 31. I worked with three other Sydney partners to set up the Melbourne office and recruit a very talented team.I then oversaw the setting up the firm’s Los Angeles office as a merger with a local law firm and a small team of Baker’s partners, and managed the integration. I was appointed as Managing Partner of the Los Angeles office and sat on the North American Administration Committee.
