Innovate UK (previously called the Technology Strategy Board) is the UK's national innovation agency with the goal of accelerating economic growth by stimulating and supporting business-led innovation. A key element in its strategy is the creation of a number of technology innovation centres (called Catapults) to allow UK businesses to access world class equipment, expertise, advice and networks supporting their growth.I acted as "interim CEO" to develop and launch the Digital Catapult whose remit is to accelerate the impact that the digital revolution is having on most parts of the economy by acting as a networked and collaborative digital development partner. The Catapult is targeted to become a world-class centre of applied research and innovation with a turnover of £30million p.a. in the medium term.Having written the business case and raised the initial £multi-million core funding, I supported recruitment of the permanent CEO and other CXOs, the development of the senior management team, and launched the initial R&D projects with partners.

I created the vision for London Technology Network in 2001 securing a start-up grant from the UK Government of £4 million.For a decade LTN supported companies to develop radically innovative products, processes and services by helping them adopt advanced technologies, typically by collaborating with research scientists.Stimulating and supporting more than 320 business-to-university collaborations annually, LTN was cited as international best practice in many government and academic reports.LTN worked with "research intense science and technology" departments of 25+ universities in the Greater South East of England and various others further afield including partners across Europe.

As CEO, I launched the Centre to stimulate and support entrepreneurial culture and exchange within and between London Business School and UCL.Raising multi-£millions from the UK government, it stimulated and supported the creation of new curriculum, departments and student led entrepreneurship activities at both universities.Raising a further £4.5 million, I created a year-long scholarship programme for cohorts of postgraduate scientists to support their work on live commercialisation projects while receiving business skills training from London Business School, Imperial College and Cambridge University helping them develop commercial and entrepreneurial careers.
