Provide strategic legal and business advice to the university president, vice presidents, faculty, staff and trustees. Evaluate non-traditional revenue generating opportunities and prepare and negotiate the documents necessary to memorialize the deals (e.g., public-private partnership with City of Winchester to manage baseball and softball teams, Global MBA program in China, Center for Immersive Learning's expansion into government contracting, Esports joint venture). Draft, review and revise university policies and contracts. Conduct internal investigations, respond to government agency inquires/investigations and manage outside counsel. Create and manage federal and state trademark compliance. Lead university's compliance and risk management efforts.

Consult a variety of clients in the sports, entertainment and internet media industries, with a particular focus on start-ups and turnarounds.

Norfolk, Virginia Area

Worked with a small team to form a holding company (BN Media) and then negotiate the purchase of Beliefnet, a privately held company, which owned and operated one of the most popular “lifestyle” websites on the internet. Relocated Beliefnet from NYC to Norfolk, VA to reduce expenses and streamline operations under BN Media, which was already operating Amerivision Communicatiions, an affinity marketing company re-selling long distance telephone, wireless and other every day goods and services. Developed BN Media's/Beliefnet's initial policies, including an employment handbook. Spent a considerable amount of time drafting and negotiating contracts, including a variety of content license agreements, and dealing with real estate and employment law issues. Also oversaw BN Media's copyright and trademark portfolio (which included Beliefnet and Amerivision marks) and managed its litigation.

Amerivision is a privately-held re-seller of everyday goods and services such as long distance telephone, wireless, internet service, roadside assistance and DirecTV. Operating as Affinity 4, this company enters into partnerships with ministries, charities and other non-profit organizations who promote the company’s services and products in exchange for the company giving back a portion of the revenue to the organization. In the past 16 years, the company has given back more than $78M. In this position, I spent a considerable amount of time dealing with vendor agreements and regulatory issues/compliance issues.

Following the inaugural season of the NBA's official minor league (then, the NBDL), I was promoted by then NBA Commissioner David Stern to serve as the NBDL's first president, to start-up a league office in Greenville, SC, to improve the brand and turn around the league's financial operations. In five years, I led the transformation of the NBDL from an eight team single entity losing more than $20M a year into the NBA Development League (aka the NBA D-League or D-League), a traditionally structured league with 14 independently owned teams, which was then generating a profit for the NBA. I sold 12 teams to new corporate owners, led the merger of four CBA teams into the NBADL and oversaw the relocation or dissolution of the initial eight teams in the southeast and two others. I resigned from the position in 2007 when the NBA decided to relocate the league office from Greenville, SC to NYC.
