Founder And Establishment Ceo The Alannah & Madeline FoundationAlannah & Madeline Foundation Jan 1997 - PresentMelbourne, AustraliaIn April 1996, 35 people were murdered by a lone gunman in Port Arthur, Tasmania. Those murdered included Nanette Mikac and her two small children - Alannah aged 6 and Madeline aged 3. The husband and father, Walter, was not present on the day.My two children - also two girls - were almost the same ages as the two murdered children and Walter was exactly my age. After seeing a beautiful item of artwork done by Alannah flashed on the TV news in the days following the tragedy, I looked at my children's artwork around my house and that very moment dreamed of establishing a Foundation named in honour of Alannah and Madeline. I turned the idea over in my head for about 8 months thinking of the things such a Foundation could achieve and even imagining the Prime Minister becoming Patron. In December 1996, I contacted Walter with my idea and we met up in January 1997. Walter supported my vision and together with Walter and members of his family, my father, Alan West (inaugural treasurer), and other survivors of the massacre such as John and Gaye Fidler, Bronwyn Hibbert (Nanette's sister), Ben Beekman (whose teenage son was caught up in the tragedy), Walter, myself and the other volunteers set about turning my idea into a reality. Radio 3AW also came on board and helped with promotion. Just 12 weeks after Walter and I first met, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation was launched by the then Prime Minister, John Howard who also agreed to become the inaugural national Patron. I am very proud of this special achievement in having helped to develop something positive out of a tragedy and to have honoured the lives of two little girls whose future was taken from them. This achievement symbolises that a little idea from one person CAN make a real difference. It shows that an idea - no matter how grand or idealistic - can be turned into a reality through developing a committed network and generating focussed energy and action by even a small group of passionate people. -
