In the wake of the Port Arthur massacre in 1997, Dr West initiated and co-founded The Alannah & Madeline Foundation with the support of Walter Mikac. This organisation was founded in memory of Walter's two children aged 6 and 3 who were murdered along with their Mother Nanette and 32 others in the Tasmanian Convict Settlement Tourist destination of Port Arthur. The Foundation supports children in Australia who have suffered violence and runs an anti-bullying program in schools.Dr West conceived of the idea for the Foundation, its name and purpose and through creativity and passion turned a little idea into a reality that inspired public media figures, Walter, other survivors and victims of the massacre and the Prime Minister of Australia to get behind his idea and help turn it into a reality. Within 3 months of first presenting his idea to Walter Mikac, the Foundation had been established. In April 1997, the first anniversary of the massacre, it was launched by the Prime Minister who became the Inaugural National Patron.
