Created a streaming data analytics platform. Built analytics pipeline using Flink and Kotlin that provides data for real-time dashboards and patient insights. High volume, high availability requirement achieved using Riak/Cassandra/Kafka. Responsible for design, implementation, reliability, performance, testing of product. Leveraged open source projects. Projects, such as Flink, were new and immature with impactful bugs. Delved deep into source code to address issues ranging from Flink bugs to major performance tuning. Track record of reading libraries, integrating them, and then knowledge sharing with the team. Performance tuned Sytem. Increased throughput by 5x. Wrote load tests, monitored the system, responded with code, infrastructure, and configuration changes to meet the needed load target. Built streaming team with 4 direct reports.
Backend Technical Lead
Delivered core infrastructure to our product. Rewrote product initialization to eliminate races. Created role based authentication system extending our framework and integrating with LDAP. Migrated DB communication from thrift to CQL. Simplified distributed communication mechanisms. Created dynamic system configuration handling. Selected/vetted libraries for use in our product. Helped migrate code to Jython. Tracked/fixed memory and resource leaks.Lead Technical Projects. Created proposals, design documents, architectural impact analysis, work breakdowns, estimates, assigned tasks to the team, tracked progress and delivered a wide range of projects.Wrote diverse application features in a distributed system. Wrote features that helped manage Cassandra including repair service features, best practice checks, distributed backup/restore solutions, and configuration management. All features were part of a shipped product that had to run on a diverse set of operating systems and contend with overburdened/failing systems. Owned backend technical debt. Lead cross team technical debt meetings, proposed and built consensus around solutions. Set expectations for team code reviews and extensively reviewed team code. Created a prioritized technical debt backlog and roadmap. Drove extensive refactoring and code quality improvement efforts.Created documentation system. Recognized a deficiency between internal developer comments and published customer documents. Unified all comments into a single source of truth that enforced proper documentation and automatically created/published documentation.Mentored new team members. Many of our new team members had never had exposure to Clojure, I regularly paired, code reviewed, and discussed code and approaches with team members. Held many lunch and learns and knowledge share sessions to bring team up to speed and improve communications.
Senior Software Engineer
Built a real-time data processing system in Storm and Clojure. Processed customer data in real-time, for reporting, filtering, and munging data for our web app’s consumption. Enabled easy extension to allow our continuing migration of legacy services into the next gen system.Created a single page application in ClojureScript. Created a dashboarding application that synchronized multiple search and data visualization widgets using core.async. Enabled page customization by composing dashboard pages from available widgets with drag and drop type functionality. Allowed for trivial extension of the product.
Senior Developer
• Designed, implemented, tested a framework for data distribution to our clients. Our system was rapidly expanding to cover more data and the level of developer effort to meet the growth was higher than we could support. The new system allowed for new data to be added via a few changes in configuration, and has been maintained with trivial effort by multiple team members going forward. Additionally, the system was testable, by using MSFT Unity for dependency injection and coding to interfaces, I reached 95% code coverage in unit tests, which have been maintained by the team going forward. Further, the system is expandable. As our requirements have shifted, the system has been able to accept data from web sources, data bases, and file systems while adhering to open/closed principles. I created the high level data flow, a proof of concept design, all initial code that produced our first 5 package deliveries, all unit testing, all functional testing, and accepted critique in code reviews. I then trained other engineers on the new process and continued to provide improvements based on their observed needs. I now provide all design improvements, code reviews, project estimation, roadmaps, and constantly meet with business side to gather new requirements.• Owner of Business Critical Python based Data delivery system. Created process monitoring and SOP for support. Refactored existing project to allow easy maintainability. Shared coding practices across teams.• Established VCS/deployment best practices. I researched, proposed, and implemented a version control strategy, build automation with automated testing & traceable artifacts, and fully automated deployment procedures.• Quickly learned legacy systems. The two days after I joined another developer gave 2 weeks’ notice. Documented each of the systems to share with the team. Met every single deliverable deadline and resolved every support issue, creating a transparent transition for our customers.
Engineer
• Designed and implemented internal notification service. Web service can send single or bulk messages to users via a variety of formats, with retries on a configurable interval or until acknowledged. Logged messages and exposed logs via web services. Designed to be high performance and highly available, running on 8 servers. Utilizing Entity Framework 4.1 I optimized all queries for speed. • Designed and implemented Group and Bulk action internal service. Exposed web service interface allowing services to request actions are repeated for all devices within a group or a bulk list (example: device activation, wakeup, etc). Consumed multiple internal services to validate complex device/carrier settings.• Created reusable customer facing web service APIs to platformize our product. Exposed web services to enable customers to write their own applications to manage 100k+ devices through our APIs. APIs are high performance, highly available (99.999%) range from device diagnostic and information to device commissioning. Designed APIs, implemented business logic, validation, calls to internal services, automated unit & integration testing and builds.• Created SQL Replication Tool. Provided a one click build-up and tear-down for MS SQL Server peer-to-peer replication. Sped up production deployments and configurable for use in multiple environments. SMO & RMO.• Contributed to B2B website. This ASP.NET website allowed for device maintenance and monitoring. Created pages with extensive server side validation such as customer IP pool setup. Globalized the site by adding resource pages for multiple language translations. Pages in ASP, js, c# server code, MS SQL Server sprocs.* Trained new customers, teaching them about our systems, troubleshooting their problems, and creating documentation and guides for the new customers’ development team.* Presented improvements to eng group. Including Entity Framework 4.1, DI in Spring.NET, Auto-functional testing.
Senior Associate Economist
Developed custom software for over 15 research projects. Development required gathering domain knowledge, eliciting requirements, designing, programming, and testing solutions within the allowed solution space.Maintained legacy software by understanding, fixing, writing tests for, and updating old code such as projects written in Fortran, C, etc. Improved performance and maintainability for a large, long running Federal Open Market Committee project. Introduced configuration files, decoupled models, taught others how to update and maintain the model. Acquired language skills necessary for the completion of each project, ex: when preexisting Gauss code existed, read books on Gauss until the code could be modified and expanded to meet current project requirements.Analyzed and presented economic results as well as cleaned and mined data.Co-Authored 3 published papers.
Consultant: Website Programmer
Redesigned personal and academic website to better fit current needs. Provided update support.
Research Consultant
Wrote programs to gather and parse information from the internet into a data set.
Research Assistant
Used Census and IRS data to support economic research. Provided support to the center by writing general programs and guides to assist research projects and maintain their website.
Research Consultant
• Made extensive use of SAS and STATA to construct and analyze datasets from both preexisting datasets and raw data• Examined data sets for probable errors and missing data; corrected errors and imputed values• Assisted with stochastic frontier analysis and OLS regression by writing the programs, checking the results, and troubleshooting problems—such as examining the skewness of the residuals, examining multicolinierity, testing for heteroskedacticity, etc• Applied stochastic frontier analysis to US Industries to determine efficiency• Troubleshot programs; correcting previously written code• Created bridge files between large data sets• Read and used census surveys, questioners, and technical documentation in order to understand the data, its background, and its applicability• Read and summarize articles to create a reference library database to be used to cross reference current projects with projects previously done by other researchers
Research Assistant
Wrote code to support economic research.Solved problems and collected difficult to obtain data for an enormous range of subjects.
