We are exploring aspects of population genetics to bring to light causal variants of disease. Our mission is to identify novel pathways/targets for drug discovery purposes.

I was the first hire in a new lab at the Salk Institute. I studied the chromatin remodeling complex SWI/SNF and how it relates to epigenetic functions and cancer development. More specifically, how this complex activates/repress enhancers and how these enhancers loop to promoters to regulate transcription. I analyzed chromatin accessibility, histone modifications, and eRNA transcription in mouse embryonic stem cells to address this question.

I studied altered gene expression and DNA methylation in adult smokers and in umbilical cord blood of women who smoked during pregnancy. I helped design and optimize protocols to mechanistically explain the relationship of DNA methylation and gene expression using bisulfite specific amplicon sequencing and a Methyl-specific PCR High Resolution Melt assay. I studied these effects in human primary cells, mouse models, and human cancer cell lines. Ultimately, this work will elucidate a direct mechanism from environmental exposure to disease and potentially discover a practical bio-marker that can be linked to certain biological outcomes.

I characterized isomers of antimicrobial peptides against broad-spectrum pathogens by studying performance, structural, and kinetic differences in a molecular crowded environment. Ultimately, this work will be used to design peptide therapeutics against multi-drug resistant bacteria.

My responsibilities included documenting charts, procedures, consultations, and notes for ER physicians. This ultimately helped relieve physicians from their paper work, so that they can better deliver medical care to their patients. Other duties include communicating between nurses and patients and making the physicians aware when certain lab/radiology results are back.
