Mr. Powers joined NESDIS in May 2022 to provide full-time support to NESDIS. Early in his tenure, Preston demonstrated an incessant desire and ability for fast learning, rapid adjustment, and an exceptional ability to fully integrate into the project. Preston's role within the team expanded very quickly and assertively thanks to his ability to identify the many areas and gaps that the project needed and to move quickly to address and fill those gaps.His agility and attentiveness were rather impressive and they surpassed my expectations in how long it would take a new hire to realize their full potential, especially in our rather highly technical environment.Preston proved to be exceptional in that regard. Thanks to his initial success, I felt comfortableadding more challenging tasks that make use of his growing technical awareness of theNESDIS Ground Enterprise landscape. Not only has he exhibited outstanding technicalcompetence, his willingness to share expertise and collaborate with others has helped SAE tostrengthen a spirit of teamwork with other NESDIS offices. In addition, I continue to call upon Mr. Powers to tap into his resourcefulness and abilities toprovide information quickly, to help me with urgent data calls and briefings, and often to act as asounding board for tackling complex questions. Mr. Preston Powers is an absolute asset to the 55th Wing, 55th Operations Group, and 55th Operations Support Squadron. I highly recommend him for any position in meterorolgy, space weather, or forecasting. I have know him for three and a half years, and he is our most knowledgeable forecaster. He is the person that I want to talk to whenever there is a concerning weather event for the 55th Wing. Not only does he have an immense depth and breadth of knowledge on meteorology, but he can share the details of a forecast to laymen that passes on a high level of much-needed understanding. He also knows the operational mission well and communicates concerns accurately and with plenty of lead time allowing leaders to make decisions, protect the base, and plan and execute the complicated evacuation of a $6.9 billion aircraft fleet. In addition, Mr. Powers used his ability to clearly convey complicated information to train all of the operations officers in the flying squadrons, group leadership, scheduling offices, and the wing commander to better understand the forecasts and the information presented in weather briefings and from multiple other sources. Furthermore, Preston is our lead trainer. Again, his outstanding abilities to convey information, educate, and his immense level of knowledge made him the perfect choice for this role. He developed all of our training materials and trains new junior forecasters to prepare them to sit in at forecaster’s desk and provide flight planning, forecasting, and base protection weather support. Finally, Mr. Powers provides a leadership role even though he is not in a supervisory position. He counsels our Airmen, provides mentorship, advice, and corrections as needed to ensure the the weather flight is a high performing team and has an outstanding reputation. Throughout the past seven years, I have had the opportunity to work with and observe Prestonin multiple capacities. His technical expertise, mentorship, and leadership while forecasting real--world operational weather throughout the European and African Commands was unparalleled.
