Paul W. Bennett is Founding Director of Schoolhouse Institute and Adjunct Professor of Education, Saint Mary's University, Halifax, NS. Nationally-recognized in Canada as an education leader, policy researcher and education commentator, Paul is also the author of ten books, Most recently The State of the System: A Reality Check on Canada's Schools (MQUP, 2020). A charter member of researchED UK since 2015, he chaired the first Canadian researchED conference, Nov 10-11, 2017 at Trinity College, University of Toronto, and is National Coordinator for reseachED Canada., He is Education Columnist for Brunswick News, producing "Education Beat" commentaries once every two weeks. Paul was appointed to the Board of the Halifax Public Libraries in June 2010 and served as Chair of the Halifax Regional Library Board from 2014 to 2017 during the opening of the award-winning Halifax Central Library. From 2011 to 2016, he served as President of the Halifax Branch, Canadian International Council, and went on to Chair of Board at Churchill Academy, Dartmouth, NS., from 2018 to 2022. He is currently Vice_President?Events and Co-Chair of the Program Advisory Board for the Canadian International Council Halifax Branch. Dr. Bennett is a widely recognized leader in Canadian education. From 1997 until 2009, Paul served as Headmaster of two of Canada’s leading independent coeducational day schools, Halifax Grammar School and Lower Canada College.He taught high school History for over 30 years and is the author of three nationally recognized Canadian History textbooks, including Canada: A North American Nation (1988 and 1995), and has twice been a top ten finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Teaching Excellence in Canadian History. He has long been a champion of educational reform, dating back to his time as a Public School Trustee with the York Region Board of Education (1988-1997). In Nova Scotia, he was instrumental in the founding of the Nova Scotia Small Schools Initiative.Some of his better known books are The Grammar School (2009); Vanishing Schools, Threatened Communities: The Contested Schoolhouse in Maritime Canada ( May 2011); The Last Stand: Schools, Communities and the Future of Rural Nova Scotia (September 2013); and Turning Points in Nova Scotia History (April 2019).
