I am a social worker in a Children and Families Team in Bridgend County Borough Council. I manage a case load of children and young people from the age of 0-16 years old, working under care and support plans, child protection plans, looked-after children plans, and adoption plans. I have gained experience working withing the private family law arena, and have some experience working in the public law arena within adoption.

I am currently working part-time as a care worker for adults with a variety of needs, supporting them to live independetly in their own homes, and empowering them to be in control of their own care. My role includes assissting clients with daily tasks such as cooking and cleaning, or assissting with daily personal care such as getting dressed and taking medication. I also offer emotional support and advice. I work with a range of clients from young adults to the elderly, with long-term illnesses or disabilities such as Muscular dystrophy, Multiple sclerosis, Dementia, Epilsepy, Autism, Sensory Impairments, and Learning Difficulties.

During my student social work placement with the Wallich, I had the opportunity to work with clients from different backgrounds and with a variety of needs and difficulties. I have worked with clients with mental health issues such as depression. PTSD and anxiety, clients with developmental disorders such as personality disorders and autism and Asperger’s, clients with learning disabilities, and clients with substance misuse. I have also worked with clients who have been victims or perpetrators of domestic violence. My role allowed me to develop my knowledge of relevant legislation such as the All Wales Child Protection Procedures 2008 and the Housing (Wales) Act 2014.During my placement at a homeless hostel for families, my role included:- completing risk assessments and needs assessments- reviewing the risk assessments and needs assessments- visiting clients in their homes- providing practical support, such as applying for benefits with the client- attending occupational therapy assessments with a client- attending Child in Need Core Groups- attending Child Protection Conferences - attending POVA Strategy Meetings- sharing information with other professionals- working in partnership with clients to manage risk (eg: formulating a risk plan for a client who was self-harming)- advocating for hostel residents- liaising with other agencies such as BCBC housing, Wallich Bond Board.

My first student social work placement was with Llamau, a Welsh homeless charity. I was mainly based at a youth hostel in Bridgend. My role included working in an environment where risk was present, and developing my knowledge of social work theory and how this can be applied in practice. I was able to develop a knowledge of the wider role of social work and social care with young homeless people and young care leavers, and experienced how multi-agency working can provide high quality services for those who may have a history of non-engagement with statutory services.My placement with Llamau allowed me to develop skills such as maintaing professional boundaries, communicating effectively, teamwork, critical thinking (eg: reviewing organisational policy during supervision)
