Key features of my dissertation: • Developed first-ever bottom-up inventory for TE modules – encompassing five TE materials – across raw material extraction, manufacturing and end-of-life stages towards their cradle-to-grave inventory analysis • Conducted life cycle assessment (LCA) of TE modules/generators for power plants and automobiles to analyze influence of waste heat emission and mobility of end-use on environmental output of TE devices • Estimated potential ecological benefits achievable via application of circular economy approach for TE materials• Undertook uncertainty and sensitivity analysis to respectively compare ecological output of TE devices for different applications and identify their impact reduction potential by using clean electricity and energy-efficient processing • Postulated the first set of eight fundamental principles for improving sustainability credentials of futuristic thermoelectric systems based on obtained LCA results (for different applications) and existing literature In addition, I have also worked on: (a) LCA of bio-based epoxies, developing their whole-scale inventory; (b) thermoelectric potential of polymer-derived ceramics; and (c) Determined the essential criteria for melt-spinnability of any polymer to identify existing biopolymers that are potentially melt-spinnable for automotive applications. Project Title; Influence of Nanoparticles on Dry Sliding Wear Behaviour of Al-Si Composites • Processed Al-12Si composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes and alumina for car pistons • Conducted wear tests and observed significant reduction in wear loss (~ 70 %) for reinforced composites over their non-reinforced counterparts, indicating high potential for automotive energy savings and extended component lifetime
