About Raphael Lee

I'm a product and engineering maker-strategist. I'm the first one in a meeting on my feet and drawing diagrams on the whiteboard. I help startup product/engineering/design teams see clearly what needs to happen next, and then I help them do that thing fast and well.I joined Airbnb as the 7th engineer, became the first engineering manager, and helped scale our team and our culture to over 2000 employees. (On my last day, CEO Brian Chesky remarked "If I could hire anyone today it would be five more Raphs.") I built a world-class technical team as the VP of Engineering at Lob (high-growth B2B API startup), then co-founded U.S. Digital Response, a nonprofit that has worked with government teams in 37 states and territories to fight COVID-19 affect over 14 million lives. We presented to the Biden Transition Team, then the Administration; my research was cited in new child care regulation in March 2024 that will simplify enrollment for families in need. I'm also an angel investor, startup advisor, and the host of the Building AI Products podcast. Now I'm wrapping up my year as a Sloan Fellow at the Stanford GSB. I'm searching for ways to use AI to make people's lives better.

  • Lob
    Vp Engineering
    Lob Mar 2017 - Sep 2019
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
Lob is a B2B SaaS startup that helps companies programmatically generate and deliver direct mail, such as postcards, letters, and checks. I joined as a member of the executive leadership team and managed between 1/3 and 1/2 of the company during my tenure.- Joined as the direct manager of 8 generalist engineers. Grew our team to roughly 30 members, with five engineering managers leading both product-focused teams (interfacing with customers, print partners, and the USPS) and platform-focused teams (Data, Security, Infrastructure, and IT).- Scaled the backend platform to transact 100,000,000s of mailpiece sends. Supported the business as our revenue increased by an order of magnitude. Over 50% of U.S. households have received mail created through Lob.- Redesigned our engineering hiring process and compensation framework, which allowed us to hire senior-, staff-, and principal-level engineering talent from companies like Google, and Twitter. Also hired from startups and bootcamps, including several people with backgrounds underrepresented in tech. 10 out of 10 interns who received full-time offers from us accepted them.- Maintained a high cadence of new product feature delivery, including enhanced analytics, improved security features, new mail configurations, and improvements to our address verification API.- Defined missing processes around technology selection, architecture review, documentation, monitoring and logging, and on-call rotations.- Created a lasting culture of learning and appreciation by sponsoring team social events, peer and intern mentorship, hackathons, and vendor-led team trainings.- Founded Lob’s Diversity and Inclusion Working Group and represented it at the Leadership Team level.- Represented the engineering department during annual and quarterly goal-setting and in quarterly board meetings.
  • Airbnb
    Engineering Manager

I joined Airbnb when nobody knew what it was. Today, it’s worth more than the world’s top five hotel brands put together.- 7th engineer at Airbnb, 1st engineering manager (among 3)- Started Airbnb’s Data Tools team, creating a world-class A/B testing platform. Within 6 months, every user-facing product team was using it. Now, over 100 new experiments ship every week. Treatments that came through A/B testing have provably created millions of dollars in business value.- Shipped a large range of products including Instant Book (15% of all reservations in 2014), Simultaneously Revealed Reviews (increased host review rates by 4% and guest review rates by 1%; all reviews longer on average), Host Standards (decreased host response time by 25 minutes; increased acceptance rates by 1.2%), an improved calendaring service, a new listing management interface, a standalone internal app for customer experience agents. Added 2.1M nights over forecast.- Managed a range of teams, both product-facing and internal, responsible for host onboarding and listing management, customer experience support tools, continuous integration, and community engagement.- Reduced unit and integration test times from 8+ hours to under 10 minutes.- As an individual contributor, implemented many user-facing features on both the backend and frontend, wrote libraries, designed scalable backend services, tuned the database and rewrote unscalable queries, built caching layers for performance, worked on internationalization and SEO, and was on-call to recover the site from outages. Coded using Ruby, JavaScript, and Java.- Helped organize internal hackathons, conferences, team meetings, documentation, and cross-departmental skill-sharing events. Recognized for contributing to Airbnb’s weird and wonderful culture. On my last day, CEO Brian Chesky remarked "If I could hire anyone today it would be five more Raphs."- Accepted a Webby Award on behalf of Airbnb with a five-word speech.
