About Raul Rodriguez

I have ten years of research experience in perception. Previously working as a postdoctoral researcher at UC – Berkeley, investigating how eye movements affect our perception using eye-tracking, virtual reality, and data analytic tools. Previously, I was a student researcher at the University of Rochester, studying how visual stimuli affected our vestibular perception. During my undergraduate career, I interned in the Neuroscience Lab and the Human Interface Branch (EV3) at NASA – Johnson Space Center, where I was introduced to the vestibular system and the relationship between a person’s perception and their environment.Competencies: human-subject research, virtual reality, MATLAB/Python, data collection/analysis/presentation, technical writing

Researched, conceptualized, and analyzed multiple concurrent studiesRecruited and trained participants for those studiesMentored, managed, and evaluated four research assistantsWrote successful grants to support public presentations at national conferencesCollaborated with a new research scientist to establish their lab by developing hardware and software and recruiting participantsDescription of Research Topics:Establishing the effectiveness of virtual reality hardware/software for use with vestibular adaption. Testing the adaptation effects of visual cues and gaze offset on inertial perception. Measured influence of visual cues on inertial heading perception and the influence of inertial cues on visual heading perception. Introduced vibration as inertial noise to measure its effect on visual-vestibular integration. Created simulations of different protocols to measure their effectiveness to establish an ideal experimental protocol. Worked to establish a link between ambulation and vestibular perception for clinical diagnosis of vestibular disorders.
