About Rex Barkdoll

Problem solving has been a passion of mine for over a decade. It's not just what I do, it's how I creatively make the world a better place and help others increase their positive impact. My journey has also taught me that building one website at a time is good, but for me to make an even greater impact, I need to be bringing people together to create change on a larger scale. These days, I'm reaching higher and am using my expertise to help my clients grow. I've been fortunate enough to serve clients as small as solo entrepreneurs who are bringing their visions to the world for the first time, to small businesses and non-profits who support growing audiences, to large businesses and government organizations who maintain national and international audiences and other business-level clientele. Each one has taught me so much and has raised the bar I set for myself. Beyond the simple goals of helping others grow, I'm also passionate about inclusivity, accessibility, and user experience. Our world is filled with people from every kind of background and ability. I believe that when we create platforms and applications that work for diverse people, they work better for all people. We can't just leave behind those who don't fit into cookie-cutter shapes. The coolest people are the ones that don't fit the mold.Let's make the world a better place together.

Web Developer

Washington D.C. Metro Area

The National Institute of Corrections serves the US public and corrections industry through providing resources and training to anyone. I'm currently helping NIC to migrate its website to the federal GovCloud while performing updates, streamline practices and procedures, and develop new branding and materials for NIC products. In 2019 and 2020, I created 18 separate documents covering everything from Tabletop exercises, contingency plans, security overviews, and platform features to meet the requirements of the Bureau of Prisons' (BOP) Authority to Test and Authority to Operate processes for onboarding digital platforms to the Cloud. Since 2016, I've also created more than 30 step-by-step guides for non-technical staff and constituents to understand business processes and how to use software. This helps to ensure that no member of our staff is a silo of information and that anyone can pick up the process documentation to quickly learn how to do repeatable tasks.Over the course of the contract, I've also provided subject matter expertise during meetings with the Client and its parent agencies. During these conversations, I strove to raise quiet voices and ask for input and buy-in from everyone in attendance. From those meetings, I prioritized customer needs and delegated tasks to peers on team projects where it was appropriate to do so. This resulted in the creation of plans of action to meet deadlines and meet or exceed customer expectations. When critical systems were affected with outages or other issues, I coordinated with key personnel, following the tabletop procedures we established in the ATT process to work on recovery while keeping my manager and the client informed of our progress in recovering the system. Between 2020 and 2021, I presented 3 opportunities for contract growth beyond what is within the scope of the contract and advocated for the creation of 2 additional positions that have since been added.

Consultant Web Developer

Westland Michigan

Working with the people at Palladium Books has been a dream. Kevin and his whole staff are wonderful people. Palladium's website was still a dinosaur from the 1990's. I created a demo site, presented it to them as an option for an upgrade, and they accepted. Throughout the revision I worked closely with their staff. I spent over 40 hours tweaking the templates for the website, forums, and their store to get the look and feel just right. I also made 15 code changes to an extension on an MVC framework through the MIVA online store.I continue to volunteer my time with them, improving the new website as needed.

Consultant Project Manager

Washington Dc

Terrestrial is a full-service creative agency who partners with clients to solve creative, strategic, and technical problems.I met weekly with team members to build out repeatable project management pipelines in ClickUp (project management software). This opened up visibility across the team to let the CEO and each member better understand what everyone was working on and where crossover was happening. Channeling each team member's efforts through ClickUp reduced their overhead by streamlining and standardizing company processes for research, website design, and repeated projects where none existed before. ClickUp also offered a variety of project insights through Kanban, Milestone, Gantt, and Calendar views that helped various learners on the team understand what was going on.In weekly meetings, I presented research on a multitude of topics from developing delight in client relationships; to a comparison of Customer Relationship Management platforms; to all-in-one solutions for HR, payroll, and credit card processing. These presentations not only opened up opportunities for unique discussions to take place, but for each person to make suggestions and challenge assumptions on the information that was gathered. As Terrestrial was presented with new opportunities to serve clients, I critically analyzed new projects for feasibility and team scheduling. Taking the insights of other SME's into account we were able to filter some projects out of the pipeline as not being feasible, while others fit into the niche the company wanted to provide solutions for perfectly.I'm excited to see where Terrestrial will go in the next few years.
