About Ryan Frank
With 25 years' experience in public affairs and communications, I work with senior leaders and teams to build trust with their managers, employees and communities as they navigate change, disruption and crisis.I've had three distinct acts in my life and career (journalism, media strategy, communications). Each has given me opportunities to explore three themes: Turning unrest into understanding, creating connections across cultures and transforming 100-year-old companies into startups.I grew up in a family deeply rooted in public service and entrepreneurship. My parents' professions instilled in me a sense of purpose and passion for ideas, innovation and strategy. My first journalism experience came at age 6 when I took the local paper into the back of my mom's VW van to record my first radio newscast into a tape deck. I went on to write for my high school newspaper where my advisor inspired me to pursue journalism in college. After a decade-plus as a government, business and investigative reporter at The Oregonian, I had the opportunity to lead the nonprofit that publishes the college newspaper at the University of Oregon. There I got to work with college students and our board to completely reimagine what a college media company should be.In 2014, my life and career led me into public affairs and strategic communications. I've since been focused on reputation management and issues and crisis management across a wide variety of industries. Since 2020, I've had the privilege of leading a 10-person strategic communications team at Legacy Health, an award-winning health system with eight hospitals in the Portland region. Together, we've supported our 14,000 caregivers through a historic period of change and challenge in America's $4 trillion health care industry while delivering on our mission of good health for all.Outside of work, I'm usually trying to create my next adventure with family and friends. I love to hike up to Mount Hood's Twin Lakes, climb at Smith Rock and run the Wildwood Trail in Forest Park. If I'm not outside, I'm likely scanning the shelves for the latest arrivals at Powell's Books or searching for a carefully crafted Americano to enjoy with a friend or a good book.
