Life

I project managed my parents life so they could prepare for old age. I got hit by a drunk driver 1000 miles from home. I travelled to Alaska. I visited 13 national parks (32 lifetime total). I also upgraded my amateur radio license to Amateur Extra. All of that with my dog by my side.

May 2020 - Nov 2021

Software Engineer (Factory Support, Network Management, Test Vehicle Support)

San Francisco, California, Us

Worked on precision GNSS (GPS) solutions from an internally developed board to integration with 3rd party receivers over a nationwide RTK-PPP hybrid network.Nationwide GPS remote sensing network Currently building a configuration management system to manage fielded devices. Created an API that streamlines the device interfaces as well as integrates other datastores and 3rd party APIs to ultimately allow other members of the team to access a central endpoint.Drove decisions for selection of 3rd party equipment that would transition us from a small scale network to something that could be manageable and reliable on a national scale.Coordinated with factory and network teams to ensure consistency and reduction of process overlap.Factory Test AutomationReduced technical debt by massive refactoring of a legacy codebase. The original developers tried to use functional programming which isn’t the right paradigm for automation fixtures. I converted the codebase to a much cleaner object oriented paradigm. This allowed the company to extend the suite of tests and also extend the types of test fixtures to cover a second product line. Worked in the full spectrum of technologies from back end, gui, database, cloud deployment, and electronics troubleshooting.Technologies usedPython, Docker, Ansible, Flask, Kubernetes, Helm, AWS, Jenkins, Ubuntu, NixOS

Nov 2018 - Apr 2020

Systems Engineer (Software And Hardware)

Boston, Massachusetts, Us

Worked on millimeter wave radios running a stripped down version of linux and we interact with them mostly through Python hooks in the compiled code.Factory Test AutomationCreated an automation test harness for a series of anechoic RF test chambers with many orchestrated components from servers to peripheral test equipment. This automation covered everything from system upgrades, automation of provisioning, and full system functional tests. These tests chambers are used for multiple product lines and are used both on the manufacturing floor and in house for R&D purposes.Automatic Level Control Characterization and CalibrationConducted thermal testing of receivers to determine the behavior of the amplifiers across the range of temperatures. Using that data I generalized a curve for transmit power that could be adjusted across all devices.Created a calibration process for ALC using thermal data points collected during the functional testing process instead of having to use a thermal chamber.Radio Network Telemetry Collection SystemCreated a network monitoring service for aspects of our radios that were not able to be monitored with off the shelf tools. This tool gave engineering and management a bigger picture of what is actually happening on the production network and was used every day to make business decisions about if a site was ready for customers or not.Mentored interns on this project. Also coordinated with other teams to give them access to the data for their own analysis.Technologies usedPython, Docker, Ansible, Artifactory, VLANs, SDRs, Fedora, Spectrum Analyzer, Litepoint

SOUND - network security Worked on the initial transition of a research prototype to a real system. This was a network security product. I mostly worked as a build, release, and systems engineer. M2CS - aircraft mission planning systemWorked on a team creating an API adapter that would collect messages from a common aircraft message system and translate them to the API of M2CS.Technologies usedJava, Git, SVN, Python, Bash, CentOS

It Student Worker For Computer Science Department

Charleston, Sc, Us

I did basic help desk type tasks for the computer science department at CofC. Somehow profs can work with complex programming ideas, but they still need someone to help them with basic IT skills. This isn't a job where I am so much developed new skills, but it is good work that was extremely flexible and was perfect for a student who was putting school first.

Aug 2013 - May 2014

Intern

Charleston, Sc, Us

At this internship they kind of allowed you to choose your own adventure so you could figure out where you fit in this industry. There was a baseline amount of work that they expected us to do in both the systems admin side and the software development side, but beyond that you could choose to focus on one or the other. I discovered that I really love coding in a production environment. School doesn't really give you an idea of what life is like for a software developer, but being on a team and working together to build something real that can make the company money is very motivating.

33W / 35T - Military Intelligence Systems Maintainer / Integrator

Arlington, Virginia, Us

I have medical issues so I didn't get to do this job as long as I would have liked. It really sucks because I started out really strong as the top soldier in my basic training company so I could have done a lot of good. I did get excellent training from this which included the majority of the credits for an associates degree. I have commented on the training in my education section. As far as actual work I did it was mostly basic Windows admin kind of things.
