I’m a science laboratory technologist and a medical laboratory scientist who has worked in a clinical space for six(6) years now. When it comes to work, I don’t joke with it because there is a statement which says “time is money and time and tides wait for no one “. I can work with or without pressure. I love to learn new things either from my superiors or colleagues. Currently I’m working at a research institution called Kintampo Health Research Centre which is one of the Three(3) research centres under Ghana Health Service (GHS).Again, I am very delighted working on a project called MALVAC- PMC ( Malaria Vaccine and Perennial Malaria Chemotherapy).I will like to highlight some key points on this study for you to appreciate my work as a medical laboratory scientist and these are:1. Integrate rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) with molecular diagnostic techniques for comprehensive screening.2. Preparing blood smears for the participants embarking on this studies.I also run FBC on samples taken from these participants to analyze the results.The main aim of this project is to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative strategies to prevent the spread of malaria in Ghana. The project will focus on vaccine development, drug resistance monitoring, advanced diagnostic tools, vector control innovations, and community engagement and education.This innovative study combines the RTS, S/AS01E vaccine with Preventive Malaria Chemotherapy (PMC) options—SP (Sulphadoxine-Pyrimethamine) or SP+AQ (Amodiaquine).Over the next 36 months, we’ll be closely monitoring 2310 infants to assess the effectiveness of this combined approach in reducing malaria incidence and improving health outcomes. This project represents a significant step forward in our battle against malaria, offering hope for more effective and sustainable prevention strategies.At the end of the study, here are some expected outcomes and these are:Expected Outcomes: 1. Development of effective malaria vaccines suitable for the Ghanaian population. 2. Comprehensive understanding of drug resistance patterns and recommendations for alternative treatments. 3. Successful implementation of innovative vector control methods, resulting in reduced mosquito populations. 4. Adoption of advanced diagnostic tools leading to earlier and more accurate detection of malaria. 5. Increased community awareness and engagement in malaria prevention, contributing to a decline in malaria incidence.
