This was a great 10 year run. We had a few challenges with increased pressure from offshore manufacturers specific to a small segment of our business involving high volume / low margin products so we developed a successful offshore manufacturing partnership with China. We grew key client sales on both high and low volume products and created and marketed a second label and protected margin. Additionally we grew US manufacturing operations with a focus and commitment to winnable products and expanded key markets from the West Cost to Midwest and beyond. Pre tax "net margin" increased from an average of less that 10% to over 23% during 5 years.We made quite a few shipping and transportation improvements too. I led an effort to restructure both departments to improve our material handling process along with changing our transportation program from 100% outside to a combination 50 / 50 split between outside/inside. As a result we were able to offer our customers a 100% fill rate, an 18% improvement in lead times with a 27% reduction in related costs.
Dairy industry was being hit hard with economic distress and failure. I met with eight Western US Dairy Manufacturing Operations executives and we discussed the feasibility of developing a joint marketing/manufacturing entity to increase economies of scale in manufacturing, sales and staffing. This led to the merger of all 8 operations into Darigold, one the most profitable Dairy Operations in the US holding over 90% market share, now one of the largest privately held firms Washington State with sales approaching $2 billion dollars. Competitive pressure was negatively impacting dairy operations and margins so we sold 1/2 the transportation fleet and routes to contract carriers and split the remaining Darigold fleet and routes into union / non-union operations using state lines as boundaries. This effort was successful and resulted in a first year 17% reduction in transportation related costs. Darigold has been able to better leverage and control transportation related costs because of our flexibility to switch between union, non union and independent contract carriers.
