I have experience in both public and private sector work, having previously worked for a local authority and two highly-regarded ecological consultancies. I now work for the Welsh statutory nature conservation organisation leading on protected sites in Denbighshire. I am a Chartered Ecologist.I've gained a detailed knowledge of national and local planning policy and strategic planning as well as development control - having provided advice to the planning authority, screened planning applications and requested and commented on survey work submitted by developers. I have notified four Sites of Special Scientific Interest and contributed towards NRW's internal guidance and procedures.As well as a strong legislative, policy and planning background, I have practical experience in Phase 1, extended Phase 1 and hedgerow surveys and more detailed survey work for dormice, reptiles, great crested newts and breeding, wintering and nesting birds. I have held NE and NRW licenses to survey dormice, great crested newts and barn owls, goshawk and Dartford warbler.I've been an active member of regional and national biodiversity forums and was involved in sub-groups looking at connectivity issues and development of the SINC/wildlife sites system in south Wales. Whilst working for the Council I co-ordinated the local biodiversity action plan on BARS and represented the South Wales LBAPs on the Wales Biodiversity Partnership Steering Group (the adviser to the Welsh Government).I have also been a long-term volunteer, enjoying roles as a Director of the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre (SEWBReC), as Secretary/Trustee of my local bird club, as a BTO/RSPB surveyor and a dormouse monitor on a Wildlife Trust reserve.
