About Dylan Richardson
I am a Mechanical Engineer at Sensitron Semiconductor. My responsibilities involve designing fixtures for electrical testing, creating and modifying programs for the Aluminum wirebonding machines, and writing procedures to aid in the production of parts. In May 2023 I graduated from Fairfield University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and as a student in the Honors Program. I have developed interests in CAD (specifically SOLIDWORKS) and 3D printing, which I have explored in my courses and in the organizations I was a part of. As the president of the Fairfield University Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers from 2021-2022, I created presentations to educate other students on using engineering tools and organized projects to collaborate on throughout the year. As a laboratory assistant for sophomore, junior, and senior mechanical engineers I created new and innovative projects and experiments for students to complete that expand on the topics they learn in Statics, Materials Science, Dynamics, Fluid Dynamics, and Energy Transfer. I was also part of the Student Advisory Board for the School of Engineering where we are working towards improving the engineering program at Fairfield.

Jr. Mechanical Engineer
Manufacturing Engineering Intern
I completed multiple projects to support various departments in their manufacturing processes:I designed and executed a project to improve the surface finish of balls to reduce wear and the increase lifespan of bearings. I used diamond lapping paste of differing grades and a Twister Speed Lathe to reduce the roughness. I used a profilometer before and after working the ball to determine the effectiveness of the various methods used. I provided floor support to the PTFE Liner Department and increased the efficiency of purchase requests.I used SolidWorks and an FDM printer to design and prototype parts to assist in the automation of a Takamaz Lathe. The parts were used as an orientation guide for the transfer between a vibratory table and a loader conveyor belt.
Laboratory Assistant
Piston Project: I created a project for mechanical engineers taking Dynamics which requires the use of Solidworks and 3D printing to make a crankshaft-piston assembly to learn about practical applications of the concepts learned in the classroom. Through various presentations and workshops, I guided students through the semester-long project. I checked in with students weekly and assessed them as they completed the various milestones. The students were able to design their crankshaft-piston assemblies and analyze their movements in Solidworks and compared those results to the actual results from the 3D printed assemblies which were moved by the use of Arduinos.Bridge Project: I created a project for mechanical engineers taking Statics requiring the use of Solidworks and 3D printing to make a bridge to learn about practical applications of trusses. I created a presentation to teach students the necessary skills to be able to complete the project as well as provide examples of what could be done. I guided them through the semester long project by checking in on them weekly, giving advice on how to execute their ideas, and gave feedback on bridges they made. Creation of New Labs: Materials Science: I used a Wide-Area 3D Measurement System VR-5000 Series to test for the surface roughness of specimens. I used the Zwick/Roell Instron Z005 to create a lab using a Three-Point flexural test to find the Modulus of Elasticity and how brittle/ductile the 3D printed specimens were. I independently learned how to operate these machines, designed and ran the experiments, and wrote a lab manual for students to follow. Fluid Mechanics: The two labs I wrote involved the use of a wind tunnel. The first lab allowed students to test how drag forces differ across a range of different shaped objects. The second lab allowed students to use an aerofoil to analyze how the change in angle of attack affected the lift and drag forces.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Tasks: I wrote and modified G-Code to allow for parts to be machined on CNC machines. I operated CNC milling machines, a CNC lathe, and Bridgeport milling machines to create custom parts for customers. I fulfilled orders by assembling and packaging locks. I assisted in the creation of a custom casing for an antique lock. Skills Learned: Writing and modifying G-Code to be compatible with CNC machines. Using Solidworks to create custom parts. How to operate CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, Bridgeport Milling Machines, Surface Grinders, and Lathes.
