Profile bio

About Rick Abbott

I have inspected and evaluated 100's of structures that were damaged or not performing as desired. My strength in the field of forensic structural engineering has been the ability to listen to people's concerns, understand their position, and bring to light the needed technical aspects of the situation in the midst of a high stress situation. As a structural design professional for 18 years, I designed and inspected most all types of building structures. Knowing how structures are designed and constructed gives me the ability to evaluate existing conditions and opinion on the structure's integrity. Highly technical engineers have a reputation as being impersonal. I have been told I don't fit that mold. While being technically accurate in the are of structural engineering, I recognize the intrinsic value of all people and enjoy working with others. My most rewarding experiences have come when I have been on assignments where I have uncovered the root cause of structural damage and have safeguarded the lives of those who live and work within the structure. My motivation is to uphold the truth while caring for the people involved.Structural Expertise: inspections, evaluations, general consulting on residential homes, restaurants, retail stores, office building, dorms, apartments, schools, hospitals, theaters, warehouses, museums, churches, and hotels.

Listed skills include Structural Engineering, Construction, Autocad, Concrete, and 11 others.

I worked on various other projects including office buildings constructed of post-tensioned concrete, composite steel with steel braced frames, wood apartment buildings, and large warehouses in California. The most rewarding aspect of this employment was developing good working relationships with people on teams consisting of the owner, the project manager, architects, engineers, and superintends all working for the same goal. While At OPUS I studied on my own initiative to obtain my LEED-AP certification. OPUS experienced a significant slowdown had to lay off the majority of the design staff. Jan 1995 - Dec 1998

Structural Engineer

The office in Richmond, Virginia provided engineering services for approximately 6 steel plate fabricators. It was here that I learned how to designed tanks and vessels according to API-650, API-620, AWWA, and ASME. We also inspected many existing plate structures so I learned the hazards of existing structures. I become familiar with confined space entry, chemical hazards, heights and harnesses. After transferring to the main office in Minneapolis, I became the main structural engineer to design an industrial laboratory facility for the containment of accidental explosions. We studied the shock waves, the gas pressures, the structural response, and the final design were based on TM-5-1500 “Structures To Resist the Effects of Accidental Explosions”. The analysis was dynamic and very interesting. The final design was efficient and my work and ingenuity resulted in a substantial cost savings to 3M.
