Biologist

Point Reyes Station, California, United States

The National Park Service initiated a five-year project to identify, evaluate, restore, and enhance coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and steelhead trout populations and their habitat within Point Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and Muir Woods National Monument. Mr. Johnson assessed current abundance of salmon and trout populations throughout the watersheds, and analyzed spatial and temporal trends in population abundance using statistical programs. Mr. Johnson assisted with winter spawner surveys implemented to determine abundance of adult coho and steelhead spawners, frequency and location of redds, and adult carcass counts. Mr. Johnson assisted in the operation of smolt traps, designed to capture pre-smolts descending the creeks during the seasonal smolt migration and helped determine lengths, weights and obtaining scale samples from individual smolts.
