Project Management – FED Project – Bradwell (May 2011 to Present)Directly accountable to the Programme Director for delivery of a high profile, risk mitigation Project named as Early FED Retrieval (EFR). The FED Retrieval Project centred on the removal of Reactor Fuel Element Debris (FED), collected in storage vaults during the lifetime of generation.The Project objective was to ensure we had a developed concept and implementation plan in place within 9 months, for the Retrieval of (FED) from the Active Waste Vaults and the delivery of the FED, in drums, to a secure Buffer store.To achieve the programme requirements, I drew upon resources from Magnox and the supply chain to establish a delivery team for this key Project for Bradwell. The self-performing team would determine if we could mitigate the escalating costs and schedule, then in the hands of another Tier 2 contractor.Starting the Project from scratch presented many challenges. During the 9 month period, I successfully managed and developed the team to deliver the Concept, Safety Case, Detailed Designs, Procurements, Manufacturing, Construction, Regulatory Approvals, Operations and Active Commissioning. The success of the Project underpinned Magnox Executive’s decision to cancel the Tier 2 contractor’s contract and to implement the EFR self-performing team, to deliver the rest of the retrieval scope for Bradwell and the FED Programme. As the successful implementation of the Project continued, I strengthened the team, proving that a critical path project could be implemented and justifying the Magnox Executive’s faith in my delivery commitment. FED Retrieval risk was mitigated, saving at least £15m from the budget, removing 57tonnes of FED in 9 months, and instilling confidence in the Regulators that Magnox has the capability for Design, Construction and Retrieval of FED.The FED Retrieval work at Bradwell has set the benchmark for future decommissioning sites.
