  • Broadcom
    Master Software Engineer
    Broadcom Jan 2007 - Apr 2022
    Durham, Nc
Following Broadcom's acquisition of LVL7, I continued my role as layer 3 technical lead, with particular focus on the data center. During this time I played a key role in the deployment of our routing software in a large data center. I directed a major, multi-year overhaul of our BGP and routing policy implementation. I enjoy the design and analysis of routing in large scale networks. I played a major role in developing plans for layer 3 features in future software releases. From June 2013 to July 2015, I designed and developed driver software and microcode for enterprise class 802.11 wireless access points. I added a smart antenna module to the Broadcom wireless driver, enabling a third-party smart antenna application to automatically select the best set of antennas to communicate with each station. In 2015/2016, I wrote and upstreamed Linux crypto device drivers for Systems on a Chip (SoC). I am currently writing firmware in C for a new generation of Network Interface Controller (NIC), with focus on multi-host, QoS, and error recovery. This work includes writing automated testcases in a pytest framework.
  • Lvl7 Systems
    Principal Software Engineer
    Lvl7 Systems May 2003 - Dec 2006
    Morrisville, Nc
After the demise of Caspian, I joined a third startup, LVL7 Systems. At LVL7, I continued to focus on layer 3 software development in the FASTPATH network operating system, at times as an individual contributor and at other times as a team lead. This role broadened my scope to include not only routing protocols, but also routing infrastructure including the routing table manager, ARP, DHCP, VRRP, IPv6, and IP stack integration. I led the implementation of non-stop forwarding.
  • Caspian Networks
    Member Of Technical Staff
    Caspian Networks Jul 2001 - Mar 2003
    Durham, Nc
After developing routing models for network management tools at Make Systems for several years, I wanted the challenge of developing a real router. So I joined startup Caspian Networks, who was developing a router for the service provider core. At Caspian, I was a member of the IS-IS team and developed features such as IS-IS TE extensions, mesh groups, LSP transmit pacing, and scaling improvements. A fun side project was an IS-IS simulator written in python used to for scalability and negative testing. A highlight at Caspian was interacting with their outstanding QA team.
  • Opnet Technologies, Inc.
    Principal Software Engineer
Opnet Technologies, Inc. Apr 2001 - Jul 2001
    Cary, Nc
Following OPNET's acquisition of Make Systems, I briefly contributed to the integration of Make Systems modeling software into OPNET's flow analysis tools within their Service Provider Guru product.
  • Make Systems
Senior Product Manager, Senior Member Of Technical Staff
    Make Systems Nov 1995 - Mar 2001
    Cary, Nc
My interest in network modeling led me to startup Make Systems, where I became one of the lead software developers for the Netmaker XA network modeling, design, and capacity planning tool. We had the scary thrill of completely rearchitecting this product to improve its performance and fidelity. I designed and implemented IP and ATM network models in C++, including BGP, IS-IS, OSPF, EIGRP, PNNI, and MPLS. As is often the case at a startup, I contributed in a variety of roles. While my primary focus was software development, I dabbled in sales support, customer training and support, and product management. I was fortunate to work with this outstanding team and its excellent leadership.
  • The Mitre Corporation
Lead Communications Engineer, Group Leader, Member Of The Technical Staff
The Mitre Corporation Oct 1990 - Nov 1995
    Mclean, Va
Following my Air Force service, I was eager to work in a more technical engineering role. Having been impressed by MITRE employees I worked with while in the Air Force, I joined MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation Systems Development (CAASD). While there, I did technical analysis of proposed air traffic control data networks, managed a small group, and had my first exposure to network simulation tools.
  • U. S. Air Force
    Officer
    U. S. Air Force Jun 1986 - Jun 1990
    Ramstein Ab, Germany
Having attended Cornell on an ROTC scholarship, I served four years in the Air Force after graduation. I was fortunate enough to spend most of this time in Europe, as part of a project management office at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, connecting intelligence sites in Europe to the Defense Data Network, a forerunner of the Internet.
