A transfer from BNG to LLWR, to lead the very challenging issues resulting from the 2002 LLWR Post Closure Safety Case (PCSC) and Operational Environmental Safety Case (OESC) submissions. This area was one of the NDA’s priority projects at the LLWR; influencing both national LLW strategy and policy decisions. Technical lead; had responsibility for the management of all technical aspects of the project deliverables including its technical underpinning, the LLWR re-authorisation process and the “Schedule 9” Forward Programme.

Accountable for the WT&D technical team, managing wide-ranging portfolios and work scopes. This involved technical, commercial, financial and project management of Low Level Waste (LLW), Plutonium Contaminated Material (PCM) & Decommissioning activities on the Sellafield site and a wider UK customer base. Chaired the WT&D Technical Committee, which sanctioned plant modification work in the operational plants and technical procedures and decommissioning project strategies and innovations.

Responsible for a Technical team, managing a three tier (Specification, Qualification, and Verification) waste acceptance system and technical support to BNFL Waste Treatment Plants, Drigg and a UK wide waste generating customer base, both internal & external to BNFL.Acquired a high degree of expertise in the field of UK LLW practices and as such was consulted nationally on LLW characterisation, acceptance, processing and decommissioning issues, as well as Hazardous Wastes. This expertise also included advice on analysis, minimisation, segregation and free release. This consultation enabled many “problem” wastes to be successfully characterised and delivered within the acceptance envelope.Responsible for and managed the Drigg “LLW Conditions for Acceptance” (CFA), ensuring it remained relevant to the Operational, Regulatory and Safety Case envelope. Through this, managed integrated LLW strategies, waste evaluation, fingerprinting and acceptability, Inventory and arisings assessments, new technology assessment/implementation, ensured that BPEO & BPM was applied to disposals, sustaining Drigg as a national asset.
