I manage the Space Data Systems software development organization for Southwest Research Institute, developing data systems for NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and commercial customers.Space Data Systems (SDS) is a CMMI 2.0 ML2 and CL2 certified software development organization whose core values focus on communication, teamwork, and high-quality sustainable software products. SDS is fortunate to have 10-15 outstanding software engineers, software testers, technical writers, and system admins that design, produce, and maintain software products for NASA, ESA and commercial customers. Software products range anywhere from small (a week's worth of coding, a few hundred lines of code) to large (20+ years, 500k+ LOC). We've also developed our own Plug and Play Process Architecture (clarity.swri.org), produced manufacturing (progress.swri.org) and project management / operations software (pims.swri.org), and support a unix-based infrastructure. Many members of the team are versed in a combination skills, including the software lifecycle process, full-stack development, software testing, system administration, user-interface design, and other related skills. Anything to make sure it all works well and our customers are happy :)

Senior Program ManagerSouthwest Research Institute Jan 1998 - PresentI started in this position as a senior research analyst, designing software for the ION and Neutral Mass Spectrometer Instrument on the NASA Cassini mission to Saturn. After a few years an opportunity presented itself to manage the software group I was in, so I took on the position of group leader, then section manager, and am now a senior program manager, managing 12-15 software engineers, student interns, and consultants that develop software for NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) missions, supporting more than 25 production software products & systems. It's an awesome job. Details on this position can be found in the "Summary" at the top of my profile. -
Engineering ConsultantVanstar Sep 1997 - Jan 1998I worked for just a few months for the Vanstar corporation after I left the Air Force. It was a short but fun gig as a consultant out at the USAA main campus in San Antonio. Most of the time I supported USAA's migration to Windows NT, which was the largest NT migration done to date - 18,000 workstations, 1500 servers and 7500 printers. These numbers were from a co-worker, which I'm prepared to believe are true :). Another co-worker taught me how to write small database applications, a helpful foundation for my next job. -
Network Supervisor, Software EngineerUsaf Aug 1994 - Sep 1997After my first pilot tour I took a mandatory staff position (early, but required for long-term officers) at Air Training Command Headquarters. In this position I was a network supervisor for a 200-user network in the Operations Directorate at HQ, AETC, Randolph AFB. I managed a small network support staff that included officers, enlisted personnel and contractors, directed network server infrastructure design and upgrade projects, and in general supported all aspects of network management, from email to tech support to file sharing to the early web servers of the time. It is true that people that brought us donuts got a slightly higher level of technical support. I also did some software design work on a training management system prototype for the new T-6 joint pilot training aircraft, and was a project coordinator for the Air University architecture redesign program. At the end of this tour my nine-year pilot commitment was complete, and instead of incurring a new six-year commitment I opted to leave the Air Force and strike out on my own. -
T-38 Instructor Pilot, Academics Branch ChiefUsaf Apr 1990 - Aug 1994After graduation from UPT I attended instructor pilot school, and water and land survival training courses, and then spent four years as a T-38 instructor pilot at Laughlin AFB as part of the 47th Flying Training Wing. I held various positions in the 86th Flying Training Squadron, including Scheduler, Standardization and Evaluation Officer, and Life Support Training Officer (some positions, such as the guy that fed student gradesheets to the computer scanner are not worth mentioning), and in the 47th Operation Support Squadron as a T-38 Academic Instructor, T-38 Academic Branch Chief, and eventually Ground Training Flight Assistant Flight Commander.Flying the T-38 was awesome, and instructing turned out to be more fun than I expected. I got to see a lot of the United States from the air. It's really big, and very beautiful. -
Student PilotUsaf Mar 1989 - Apr 1990I survived the one-year Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) course, courtesy of the Air Force, learning to fly the Cessna T-37 ("tweet") and the Northrop T-38 ("talon"), and was subsequently "volunteered" to become an first-assignment instructor pilot. This was not according to plan, but it turned out to be a great experience. I can talk about pilot stories for some time if prompted. I think I miss flying ...
