I am currently working for this large radiology practice that covers radiology services at many hospitals in the Phoenix and surrounding area. The cases are interesting and varied, including level I trauma. This is a very busy position as we read for 6 emergency room centers at night.

Fulfilling a long-time passion, I have spent the past 3 years blogging and writing a book marrying my interests in wellness and spiritual exploration. Being a partner in this radiology group allowed me time to settle down and help raise a family in a rural bedroom community of Pittsburgh. Here I developed an interest in sustainability and organic gardening.In Western Pennsylvania, the cases I came across were varied. Unfortunately, many people in this area are obese and/or smoke cigarettes and so, I diagnosed the sequela of diabetes, emphysema and cancer. Complications from diabetes led too many people down the road of amputation. Lost toes, feet and even legs were relatively common. In addition, histoplasmosis, a fungal disease found in the soil, is common in this area. Western PA is a big deer hunting location and I was impressed with how “clean” the carotid arteries were of older people who frequently ate deer meat. I also got to see the explosion in cases of Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, over this period of time. As with many communities across the US, there were too many drug overdoses in this patient population. Show less

Lauderdale, Florida, I made my income doing temporary assignments at numerous medical centers, from universities to small outpatient imaging centers. Lauderdale, Florida, I made my income doing temporary assignments at numerous medical centers, from universities to small outpatient imaging centers. As a locum tenens physician, I had the opportunity to work in many states scattered across the US. My practice setting included inner cities, such as Manhattan, smaller cities such as Chattanooga, TN, towns including Walla Walla Washington, big city suburbs like Palisades Park, NJ, and rural areas such as West Plains, Missouri. I worked in 12 states during this block of time and met an incredible assortment of people and a myriad of disease. It was during this time that I saw first hand the varied health of our nation’s population. Miscarriage rates in one town were absurdly high whereas other towns had “giant” 13 and 14 year old girls and boys who towered over their 5’8” parents at well over 6 feet. I saw a correlation between drier environments and the increased prevalence of people suffering with kidney stones and diseases associated with calcium deposition in tissues such as cartilage, ligaments and tendons. At the Cleveland Clinic - Florida campus, I worked as a general radiologist. Although I was the department “go to guy” for orthopedic cases, I was able to maintain my skills interpreting all cases in the radiology department. Although I was the department “go to guy” for orthopedic cases, I was able to maintain my skills interpreting all cases in the radiology department. As with my NYU experience, I had the privilege to see many unusual cases at the Cleveland Clinic. From the assessment of gender reassignment surgery to advanced fungal infection, and tropical disease, the cases I saw in this practice were diverse and sometimes very unusual. In general, the people in this climate were healthier overall than they were in many other locations that I have worked. As expected, complications of skin cancer were much more common in this practice location. Medical students and residents came into the department for an introduction to radiology and for training purposes. At Cleveland Clinic, I had the opportunity to work closely with the re-known orthopedic surgeon, Jeffrey Minkoff, M.D., and read or review musculoskeletal cases performed on many professional athletes. On many occasions, I joined Dr. Minkoff in the operating room to see the surgical correlation to the imaging studies that I had interpreted. While working at NYU, I had the opportunity to again work with several world leaders in the field of musculoskeletal radiology. Zehava Rosenberg, an expert in foot and ankle radiology, was a mentor and remains a good friend of mine to this day. Zehava and I wrote many research papers and a book chapter together. At NYU, I had the opportunity to diagnose bizarre skeletal dysplasias and genetic syndromes referred to the institution from around the world. In addition, I was able to see the toxic effects of inner city living at Belleview medical center. Conditions such as lead poisoning weren’t common, but did come across the reading board more commonly than in other practice settings. This experience was invaluable. My ability to interpret Foot and Ankle MRI and Shoulder imaging studies vastly improved through my work with Dr. Rosenberg and Maahvish Raffi, another accomplished fellow attending. It was during this time that PICC lines came into existence and I was the leader at placing fluoroscopically guided PICC lines at HJD. I also learned how to perform fluoroscopically guided epidural steroid injections and other procedures for chronic pain management. Although the position was in gastrointestinal (GI) imaging, and not my subspecialty of musculoskeletal imaging, I did have an opportunity to build up a practice doing foot and ankle injections.
