Responsible for a dozen professionals and five general service staff, with main programme foci: maintain the WHO normative functions with respect to drinking water quality, safe use of wastewater in agricultura and quality of recreational water; supervise global monitoring of Access to drinking wáter and sanitation (MDG target 7C) and of the component of the enabling environment for drinking wáter suply and sanitation services (GLAAS). Resource mobilization for the programme from bilateral and multilateral donors. Human resources management. Publishing results and communicating outputs from the programme at conferences and other international events. Represent WHO in UN-Water.

Responsible for the programmatic activities of the links between water resources development and public health issues (diarrhoeal diseases; vector borne diseases prevention and control). Responsible for the completing of WHO Guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater in agricultura and aquaculture (third edition, 2006); represented WHO in the negotiations on the Stockholm Convention on Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs, 1998-2001); established a programme for capacity development in health impact assessment in the Mekong countries (policy formulation, institution strengthening, human resource development) (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Viet Nam, 2003-2009).

Executive Secretary of the WHO/FAO/UNEP Panel of Experts on Environmental Management for Vector Control - promotion of environmental management for the prevention and control of water-associated vector-borne diseases - areas of activity: Research development and backstopping; capacity development, with a focus on health impact assessment; organization of anual Panel meetings, until 1996; Guideline development on intersectoral collaboration, impact assessment and ecnomic analysis of vector control options; networking with the aim to link health and agricultura institutes (work with the CGIAR: IRRI, IWMI, WARDA, ISNAR, IFPRI)
