From its formation in 1989 until the end of June 1994 I was Area Support Officer and subsequently Area Health & Safety Coordinator for the National Rivers Authority and as such a member of the Area Management Team.Previously I had been an administrator for Anglian Water after leaving the Civil Service in 1978.I graduated from Imperial College London in 1969 with an Honours Degree in Chemistry during which I specialised in organic and biochemistry. I worked at Water Pollution Research Laboratory Stevenage until it was privitised in 1874, after which I was transfered to the Department of the Environment, Ministry of Transport, Marsham Street, London. There I worked in the Transport of Dangerous Goods Section, mainly on vetting and preparing regulations governing the transport of explosives and of petroleum spirit until I left to take the post with Anglian Water.Since school days I have been heavily involved in the sport of rowing. I joined the Bedford Rowing Club in 1961 aged thirteen and a half! I have coached there since 1970, during which time I studied sports physiology off my own back to enhance my coaching, although I have not taken any exams in the subject. I instigated a junior section of the club in the early 1970s. I have been secretary of the club and captain five times and am an honorary vice-president.
