Supported an experimental physicist and his staff of faculty researchers and graduate students who built a state of the art superconducting Gravitational Radiation Detector (GRD) using an 11,000 pound cylinder of niobium-coated aluminum contained inside a 10 foot diameter cryogenic dewar. The aluminum cylinder was cooled down using liquid nitrogen and liquid helium until the niobium became superconducting, and then electromagnetically levitated above a cradle of niobium coils to mechanically isolate it from external noise sources. This detector operated successfully for 30 years along with two other identical detectors that were built at Stanford and in Rome, Italy.
