I left the service in 1998 after achieving the rating of Charge Chief Marine Engineering Artificer to which I was promoted to in 1991. Having held various positions at sea and shore based, working with and on gas turbine and diesel propelled ships. The position of charge chief includes duties of the overseeing the operation of the propulsion plant (including leading the procedural training of the operators), responsible for the planning of maintenance, repairs and defects and qualified to deputise for the marine engineering officer in his absence. Leading maintenance teams, planning & carrying out scheduled and corrective work on ships which include gas turbine and large diesel engine exchanges.
