I have promoted ideas, products, policies, and individuals to select publics for more than 44 years, along the way building strategic communication expertise on a range of approaches, challenges, and topics. I have done this work in a variety of settings - advertising and public relations agencies, political campaigns, non-profit and government organizations, and the meeting rooms of hundreds of clients. I also have reporting, producing, and management experience in seven television, radio, and wire service newsrooms. I have revived a half dozen struggling communications organizations, and, with partners, launched two communication firms.Communication is my passion. I pursue every assignment with energy, optimism, and creativity. Following this approach, I have designed and implemented successful and measurable integrated communication plans; developed or leveraged new or existing channels to deliver messages to publics; written and produced news and advertising copy for traditional and new media; created and directed earned media events and advocacy programs; built and managed winning candidate and issue campaigns; raised millions of dollars in cash and in-kind contributions to support charitable and political causes; identified and engaged crisis and reputation-threatening events, many with global implications; led teams through successful reorganizations; and steered award-winning broadcast news coverage. I rely on data, am focused on publics, understand the importance of messaging, appreciate and teach good writing, encourage and model creative and strategic communication methods, and above all, care deeply about my teams.My marketing and journalism contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including Addys and Emmys for advertising and television news excellence. Likewise, my public relations campaigns and podcasting productions have been honored by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). I am also the recipient of several journalism awards from state and national bureaus of the Associated Press (AP).During the COVID-19 pandemic, I wrote and published a handbook of practical communication tips for public officials. My robust affection for teaching extends beyond the workplace into the classroom where I serve as an adjunct professor at the American University School of Communication in Washington D.C. In my work, I often refer to my collection of 200+ strategic communication books that includes original works penned by the titans of our craft.
