About Robert Thomas
I'm a mechanical engineer with a background in design and structural engineering who took a shot at operating a small business. The business went quite well, but I've learned some things about what I want and don't want out of a career. That opened me back up to finding a new position putting my education and experience to work. Then I found BBNA and have been working as a Pre-Engineered Metal Building Designer for the last several months. Oddly enough, working with someone I did projects for as a contractor. I've been enjoying my time back in the office with my revitalized appreciation for the consistency and benefits working for someone else. I'm now hoping that my experience here will grow my engineering career and look forward to seeking out my PE soon.
Listed skills include Mathcad, Modeling, Finite Element Analysis, Mechanical Engineering, and 9 others.

Small Business Owner
Due to unfavorable circumstances at my former job I decided to take a break from the corporate world and start my own business as a home improvement contractor. I specialize in small to medium size projects of any sort. I have done everything from hanging pictures in a nursery to remodeling a kitchen. My more notable projects include complete exterior repaints of houses, master bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, and an attic to bonus room conversion. I have learned a ton of hands on… Show more Due to unfavorable circumstances at my former job I decided to take a break from the corporate world and start my own business as a home improvement contractor. I specialize in small to medium size projects of any sort. I have done everything from hanging pictures in a nursery to remodeling a kitchen. My more notable projects include complete exterior repaints of houses, master bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, and an attic to bonus room conversion. I have learned a ton of hands on skills during this experience, but I have also gained a ton of soft skill experience. I'm a one man show. Anyone who thinks they understand time management has never run their own business. I'm in charge of initial contact and meeting with clients, putting together bid proposals for future work opportunities, and doing the actual work. I also have to handle all of the business paperwork, taxes, and finances. I have a whole new perspective on work in general. My background is definitely not as a tradesmen, but I've adopted a very honest and transparent approach with how work will be done and cost that has allowed me to build a list of consistent clients. I have also found it fun to put my technical background to work in problem solving. Whether it be getting creative on how to install long boards by myself, or troubleshooting how water is getting into certain areas and causing rot. Despite all of this, I have also learned that I don't want to be a general contractor. As my earning power is limited alone and the labor is physically taxing, I've decided to explore opportunities back in the corporate world. Show less

At DCI I managed a part of a large project requiring the design of a conveyor system for one of their package handling clients. I had to become familiar with internal specifications related to conveyor system design as well as the customer specification requirements to ensure the layout design met both. All conveyor systems were designed using Autocad. I was tasked with finalizing a conveyor set which required the following process. The master file was used to ensure all the top level and section views were showing the same information. Individual drawing files were used to show snapshots of each individual conveyor in the entire system. A bill of materials was created and managed for the whole system. Once the system design was finalized it was sent to the customer for review. Final adjustments were made and then construction would begin. The layout of the conveyors is somewhat predetermined by the customer. My main “design” task was incorporating all the steel support members for the conveyors and equipment. Working for DCI gave me experience in another side of design work using a new software. It furthered my ability to collaborate with clients and coworkers across different departments. I was able to get my portion of the project to the construction phase in a matter of months despite slow movement prior to my starting. Show less

Working for ARA took me out of my comfort zone as a mechanical engineer and introduced me to a wide variety of civil engineering principles. As a security engineer my primary function is to develop protective designs for buildings. The position was not a traditional structural engineering position, however. We designed buildings for explosive loads. These high-pressure, dynamic loads are very non-traditional in design, and working for ARA gave me a chance to learn a broad set of new skills. Every project had something new and different. I learned several softwares that have been developed by the company to perform these analyses. I have performed single degree of freedom analysis for concrete facades and beams, for aluminum and steel window mullion systems, and a variety of other scenarios. I have also performed non-linear finite element analysis on window mullion systems and concrete support structures. In designing these systems I have performed a variety of mechanical connection design calculations using the AISC Code Manual and other relevant codes. I worked with the structural engineers (our clients) to provide anchorage solutions whether it’s to a steel structure or concrete member. All of this was then compiled into a detailed report. My time posing as a civil engineer enriched my background as a mechanical engineer, and gave me an opportunity to develop many new technical skills. I also developed skills on the business side. I took part in design meetings, prepared proposals, and managed small projects. Show less

I was in the design engineering group, which meant I made design changes to solid models and drawings, performed tolerance stacks, and oversaw testing. In order to do all of those things I had to learn to interact with people across a wide variety of groups internal and external to Eaton. I had to work with the manufacturing engineers to ensure design changes could be incorporated, work with supply chain to get products ordered, work with the engineering lab technicians to perform testing, and work with suppliers and customers to make sure we were getting what we wanted and they were getting what they wanted. I learned to effectively interact and work alongside many different people with many different goals and backgrounds. My favorite project involved designing a valve from start to finish. Our analysis team had a concept for what components would provide the necessary pressure and flow requirements. I had to put it all together. I created the solid models and drawings of all the piece parts. I had to work with manufacturing to get the parts made. I worked with the lab techs to get the valve assembled and tested. It didn’t end up functioning as needed, but it was really cool to see something I took from concept to existence in operation. At the time I most enjoyed the technical work, but I think the most valuable skills I learned were concerning how to work with people as part of a team. Show less
