As the program manager for our flight’s training section, I oversee training in over 400 tasks related to advanced range clearance and mission support operations at the 3.1M-acre Nevada Test & Training Range. In addition to coordinating those operations with installation leaders, range management offices, and environmental agencies, I personally supervise and lead teams of unexploded ordnance (UXO) technicians through both routine and emergency responses in the local area.Taking over this position gave me the opportunity to fulfill a long-standing goal: to make Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training as realistic as possible, even at home. Drawing on my own experience in deployed and stateside environments, as well as my previous tenure as a training manager, I adjusted our local training scenarios so that they more accurately reflected their real-world contexts, and I soon noticed an increase in employees’ engagement with and dedication to their training. It’s been an honor to pass my knowledge and experience on to the next generation of EOD technicians, and to see how far their training and performance has progressed.

Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska, United States

While leading the equipment and training sections for the EOD unit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, my primary responsibility was to ensure that our teams were ready to deploy at any time. I oversaw our equipment inventory, conducted specialized maintenance and hazard analysis, and evaluated our existing equipment and training procedures to clear backlogs and ensure safety compliance. As a subject-matter expert, I additionally led 165K-acre joint-service range clearance operations and responses for suspect packages, inspected pyrotechnics at a C-124 crash, and facilitated the render safe of a damaged missile on a $150M aircraft.Despite the challenges inherent to leading these sections—such as identifying and then having to resolve significant higher-level errors with our existing equipment deployment procedures—I found my work rewarding. Above all else, my team was fantastic, rising to every occasion and jumping at the opportunity to solve problems, employ new procedures, and grow as both individuals and as a unit.

Andersen Afb, Guam

When I took over the EOD training program at Andersen Air Force Base, I had to hit the ground running. It turned out that the position had been vacant for several months, which meant it was my job to catch up on everything that hadn’t been properly tracked in addition to coordinating all current and future training. On the bright side, this also meant I had the opportunity to redesign the unit’s training program as I saw fit, and I soon developed an affinity for authoring real-world training scenarios based on my own deployed experiences and current intelligence reports. I also developed a training tracking program that I was able to take with me to my next base, benefitting that unit, as well. While I was proud of my accomplishments at Andersen AFB, I was most proud of the work I completed while deployed during this time. In addition to supervising others on missions, I was responsible for over 70 key pieces of equipment that our teams used in the region. I coordinated equipment transport, conducted detailed troubleshooting, and performed maintenance directly or liaised with other repair facilities, ensuring that each team had operating equipment for each and every mission.

As an EOD specialist deployed to Iraq, I was tasked with training Iraqi Police EOD forces. Teaching at that scale was completely new to me—as was training foreign forces—but my fellow instructors and I soon realized that we could bridge cultural and linguistic gaps by focusing on our shared endeavor: responding to and rendering safe explosive ordnance. Over the six months I was there, I watched the team I trained go from novice officers to careful and coordinated technicians. Their professional transformation and my own development as a supervisor are two of my greatest accomplishments to date.
