From an early age I realized Bendheim was more than a business. It was a way of life that I loved. As the oldest of three brothers raised in this generational glass company, I’ve worked with thousands of different glass types, from colored mouth blown art glass to 7 meter lengths of structural channel glass. Bendheim was founded in 1927 by our maternal grandparents, Sem and Margaret Bendheim. As importers of European colored glass for the stained glass trade, they built a strong business which survived the Great Depression and continued to prosper. In the 1950’s, our father, Fred Jayson, married their daughter, Erna, and joined the business. Over the years my younger brothers and I worked the summers at Bendheim, handling the thousands of glasses and learning their unique characteristics. The glass was beautiful, and many of the people around it were exceptionally talented and exciting. Our parents loved to entertain and our home was frequently filled with artists, designers, and studio owners. Our father continued to grow the business through the 1960’s and 70’s. He passed to us a company with a solid foundation built on relationships spanning 50 years. Before joining the company full-time, I completed a six month apprenticeship at the Glashütte Lamberts in Germany. Working on the factory floor from 4 to 11 AM, I gained a true appreciation for Lamberts mouth-blown glass. I came to understand the tremendous skill and dedication of the craftsmen, and made cherished friends.These are the relationships that have enhanced our lives and built true partnerships; strengthening our company over the decades.
