With 27 years’ experience in recruitment and 17 years owning and running a business, I’ve always been hugely interested in how people come together to produce great results. I learned early on that no one aspect guarantees results; a complex mix of people (attitude, experience, drivers, ambition), business processes, and work environment (management styles, personality types, diversity) must be in place to ensure success. Fortunately, I love detail. So, immersing myself in the nuance of a client’s challenge to distil the key aspects that will lead to a great hire come naturally to me. Similarly, understanding what’s really driving a candidate and forming a picture of the environment in which they’ll thrive is exciting.Why do I do this? Of all the injustices in the world, the one I’m most passionate about trying to solve is the uneven distribution of opportunity. As a recruiter, I get to play a part in ensuring opportunity is spread as far and as wide as possible. This isn’t just about placing more adverts; it’s about the conscious desire and intellectual challenge to think broadly about the numerous different profiles that could succeed in a role and then proactively and rigorously exploring these, taking everyone involved along on the journey.And it’s massively fulfilling; because every time I deliver an assignment, I improve the lives of everyone involved. I’ve successfully delivered assignments in most parts of the world; Europe, Asia, Middle East, North America, so geography isn’t a challenge. And I’m versatile, having covered functions including sales, IT, finance, human resources, operations, R&D and general management.
