I have over 25 years of experience in social business. Over that time I have set up, worked for, and supported a wide range of social enterprises. I started my career working for a fairtrade co-operative in Leeds, and as Business Development Manager I led on a community share offer which raised investment from local people to support the expansion of the co-op into new high street premises.I then became Director of Social Enterprise Leeds, where I was responsible for providing support to new and established social enterprises, whilst also advocating for the rapidly growing movement.From there I moved to West Yorkshire Social Enterprise School, where I developed and led on the delivery of the Start-up Scholarship Scheme, which provided intensive business support and start-up finance to social enterprises. For five years I worked as a consultant, setting up Social Business Consulting. We worked primarily with the public sector - working in particular to support social enterprises in the adult social care sector. We designed and delivered the Ideas That Change Lives programme, working closely with Leeds City Council.In 2010 I co-founded Social Business Brokers CIC, a social enterprise which develops creative, collaborative solutions to complex social problems. In 2013 we set up Empty Homes Doctor, a service which has now helped to bring back into use over 1000 long term empty homes in Leeds.In 2018 I led on the development of Zero Waste Leeds, to engage local people and businesses in a practical response to the climate emergency. We ran campaigns on a range of issues including glass recycling, food waste reduction, on-the-go recycling and the broader circular economy. I left Social Business Brokers in May 2023.Since November 2023 I have been working part-time as an Enterprise Coach with Participate Projects, as part of the Business For Good, West Yorkshire programme - offering coaching support to social entrepreneurs in Wakefield and Kirklees. I am also working as a freelance consultant, specialising in supporting individuals, small businesses, social enterprises and third sector organisations to develop Climate Action Plans. My other areas of expertise include social enterprise start-up, business planning, market research, feasibility studies, marketing, behaviour change campaigns and mentoring. I have in-depth knowledge of a range of issues including the climate emergency, circular economy, recycling and waste reduction.I write about social innovation at The Social Business on Substack.
