Since I was 14 years old, I knew I wanted to become a physical therapist. My dream came true when I graduated from U.S. Army-Baylor in August 2014 with my doctorate in physical therapy. I moved to Fort Campbell, KY for my first job as a physical therapist within the U.S. Army. I worked in 3 different physical therapy clinics during my first 18 months at Fort Campbell. I learned the physical requirements for each military job so I could communicate the prognosis of each patient to the managing provider and unit. In March 2016, I became a brigade physical therapist and I am still in this position. I am in charge of improving and maintaining the musculoskeletal health of over 3,000 soldiers through evaluation, treatment, and injury prevention education. I got very good at physically evaluating the strength, mobility and motor control of each patient in order to assess their ability to return back to work without restriction. I also established a reconditioning program within my unit that improved recovery rates and re-injury rates by roughly 50% while advising unit leaders on performance optimization training schedules. However, my true passion is holistic therapy and pain education. No patient will fully recover if they do not practice self-care and learn to help themselves. On the other hand, it is up to the provider to initiate and forge a strong patient-provider relationship that gives patients the courage to heal and come back stronger. Without effective communication, patients will not find their way in their rehabilitative journey. We must be their stepping stones and advisors.
