Analogs of the pantetheine fragment of coenzyme A containing O-H and Se-H functional groups in place of the naturally occurring S-H (sulfhydryl) group were synthesized using a two-step approach. The analogs were characterized (1H and 13C NMR, LCMS) and evaluated as potential competitive inhibitors of the HMGR enzyme. Results were summarized in a written and oral thesis, and presented at both the Murdock Undergraduate Research Conference (Tacoma, WA, November 2008) and the Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference (Spokane, WA, April 2009).

A method for the fabrication of microspheres from a proprietary co-polymer was investigated in collaboration with Ægis Biosciences. An oil in water (o/w) emulsion technique was developed by optimizing various experimental parameters. Once fabricated, the microspheres were characterized based upon size uniformity, water retention and ion-exchange kinetics. Results were summarized in a written report to the Small Business Innovation Research Program and presented at the 2007 AAAS conference in Boise, ID.
