Senior Sql Server Dba / Data Migration Specialist / Data Security Specialist
SJOG employed Roger to assist in the migration of their multi-terabyte BI data warehouse (DWH) and associated ETLs to a new on-premise system. The DWH is a heterogeneous environment with data sources from MySQL (Infomedix), Oracle (WebPAS, etc.) and many SQL Server application data-sources. Roger set up internal monitoring of the existing BI DWH SQL Server to determine the activity of who, how and what was connecting to the DWH, a full security audit of the environment to determine the exact levels of access each user had on the system, specification of the new DWH environment, pre migration activities including a full rebuild of their DWH Staging database (to reclaim approx. 700 GBs of free-space and remove all dangling and broken database objects), page compression and footprint shrinking, post migration activities including upgrading the DWH databases to SQL Server compatibility level 150, automated maintenance of the DWH databases to keep performance levels within agreed SLAs, configuring of TDE and TLS and consulting on new security protocols to provide enterprise-class protection of the data. Roger also built a version control system that allows the DBAs to monitor database level changes occurring in each 24 hour period (thereby thwarting unauthorised changes to the DWH environment). Once the migration was complete, Roger designed, deployed and provisioned a multi-instance TEST/DEV SQL Server environment and designed, created and deployed automata to refresh both instances according to business specifications.
Senior Data Migration & App Integration Specialist
MGL employed Roger’s to migrate and cut over their existing in-house and third party recruitment applications and processes to a cloud-based recruitment and workflow system. This work had three components: migration of existing data to the cloud-based system; integration of the event-based dataflow of the cloud-based system with internal systems; and integration of the data flow from internal systems to the cloud-based system. Migration involved the creation of end to end repeatable processes to migrate database and document data (source data was 2+ TBs) from MGL’s recruitment systems to the cloud-based system. This involved a great deal of data mapping and data cleansing (all SQL based solutions) as well as securely mapping, copying, renaming, encrypting and transferring millions of locally stored candidate, applicant, employee, ex-employee, sub-contractor, etc., documents (doc-types included: resumes, medical tests, training certificates, working rights, licenses, etc.) to the new cloud-based infrastructure in an extremely secure and also timely manner. This work was accomplished using PowerShell and T-SQL based solutions. Event-based integration involved receiving JSON files from the could system (these files are parts of sets of data about recruitment candidates and their extensive database and file-based data – where the file-based data was also encoded in the JSON files in Base-64 format), parsing these JSON files back into a relational format (as an adjacency list) then processing the adjacency list back into relation data for MGLs data-warehouse, then reacting to events in real-time and interacting with existing local systems to pass that data to them – this part of the system was all coded using T-SQL. Integration of existing systems with the cloud-based system was solved using SSIS components generating csv files that were then automatically uploaded to the cloud system via HTTPS endpoints. This was coded using SSIS components with T-SQL and C# routines.
Senior Dba / Azure / Migration / Automation /Replication /High-Availability Specialist
Roger was recruited to provide technical services to lift the RACI BI database/data warehouse environment into the Azure cloud. The BI environment consists of several multi-terabyte SQL Server databases that are transactionally replicated from the core RACI database environment. One of the biggest challenges Roger faced was to make the finished system look identical to all existing interfaces to the data. The (now decomm’d) on premise environment was Oracle and the new PaaS cloud environment is SQL Server so this presented a number of technical challenges, including the need to generate and seed several columns against all tables in the cloud replicated environment. Roger developed an end-to-end automated process to build and initialise the replication in the cloud then add the computed columns and re-import indexes, etc., for the existing interfaces. The job took Roger 14 months from scratch to the finished live system – which is now running smoothly in the PROD (and several non-prod) environments.
Senior Analyst /Programmer / Db Specialist
Imdex has a SaaS, cloud-based, mobile application software platform that is used by many major mineral-resource enterprises to help manage drilling exploration and on-site data collection. Imdex have developed a new version of the application and Roger was contracted to solve several complicated data migration issues that involved moving client data and customised, data-capturing, application mobile interfaces to the new version of the software. Roger analysed the existing problems, created proof of concepts to show how the problems could be solved, then developed an automated system using T-SQL and PowerShell to provide a repeatable migration process for the 64 clients that must be migrated. The solutions involve comparing the old and new database schemas (old version uses stand-alone, customised database schemas, and the new version uses standardised database shards - one per tenant in a distributed, cloud-based schema model), building/generating the data and interface transforms using JSON as the medium, then injecting the JSON transforms into the new system for re-integration.
Senior Database Administrator / Analyst/Programmer / Mentor / Migration Specialist
Roger was initially engaged by the business to perform an analysis of their existing Corporate, COMMS and OT networks with respect to the SQL Server instances and associated database applications running on those networks, with the aim of providing a detailed map of how these environments could be upgraded and consolidated in order to reduce cost, reduce risk, increase productivity, reduce manageability effort, increase security and increase application reliability mostly across the Corporate environment but also branching into the COMMS and OT environments as well. To perform the analysis, Roger developed and deployed several processes including port scanning in each network segment, monitoring all SQL Server instances and hosts, monitoring connectivity to all instances in the environment and monitoring AD to build a knowledge base of the existing environment that he then analysed and subsequently recommended several strategies that could be employed to achieve the aim of the analysis. Roger was then contracted to design, develop and deploy the strategies presented to the business. Roger’s other duties at ARC were to mentor the existing team of analysts, developers and DBA on how to get the best out of their SQL Server environment, provide assistance to staff members that were working with external SOX auditors, provide guidance to management staff, and assist with performing third party database-application upgrades.
