Roger Marks is an international expert in IEEE 802 networks, 4G/5G wireless communications, and strategic standardization. A PhD physicist and an IEEE Fellow, he serves as Chair of the 802 Network Enhancements for the Next Decade Industry Connections Activity (Nendica). Marks founded the IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access in 1998 and has chaired that group since inception, simultaneously serving on the IEEE 802 Executive Committee, where he was also IEEE 802 Second Vice Chair (2018-2024). IEEE Standard 802.16, the first 4G wireless standard, was accepted as the basis of WiMAX technology, which led to sales of over 10 billion dollars. Marks also led successful efforts to bring recognition of IEEE 802.16 within the International Telecommunication Union as IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced technologies. He had a 17-year career at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, later serving as Vice President with NextWave Wireless and as Vice President for Technology with the WiMAX Forum. Marks launched EthAirNet Associates in order to develop novel network technologies, particularly in the data center. He is active within the IEEE 802.1 Working Group, serving as Technical Editor for two standardization projects on local addressing, and in the IEEE 802.11 Working Group, formerly serving as Vice Chair of the Advanced Access Network Interface (AANI) Standing Committee.
