Began converting the school's technology from a hobbyist system approach to an enterprise approach by replacing home brew and small shop computers with current models, upgrading servers and server OS, and replacing some of the unsupervised student installed network cabling with professional cabling. Brought in professionals to provided expertise where needed.Researched and managed a project replacing the 20+ year-old phone system with one providing current phone and voice mail functionality.Implemented programming classes (Java), and was working with a sister institution to provide college credit in Introduction to Programming (Java).

One Geico Plaza, Bethesda, Md

Initiated Y2K remediation on several systems in 1995, which lead to a full scale pilot with 20 programmers. Continued providing technical guidance for the remainder of the Y2K effort. Coordinated Y2K activities with all organizations with which we exchanged data. Managed internal Y2K departmental level projects by providing technical expertise, monthly interdepartmental coordination meetings, and on-site training and auditing nationally. Provided early guidance to sister corporations such as The Washington Post and Berkshire Hathaway. This project was a blast as it ranged from traditional technical programming to non-traditional systems such as HVAC and emergency power, and ranged to the exotic from the corporate jet interfacing with other national companies at a high level. Researched the current budget process with the budget department, and from that led the effort to identify features of a new budget process. Designed the new budget process based on feature specifications, partitioned the design into smaller projects that could be delivered independently, and managed the projects over the following 2 years. This project set a new standard of cooperation between budgeting and IT. Languages involved included COBOL, DB2, and CICS.Researched and redesigned an inefficient back-end report system, leading to a reduction in run time from CPU weeks to CPU days, and improved report delivery from a week after the job started to the next day for initial reports, though subsequent (lower priority) reports trickled out for a week. This project had the added benefit of improving maintainability, cutting maintenance time because the system was easier to understand and compartmentalized. Languages used included PL/I (on the old system), COBOL and DB2 on the new system.

Maintained the policy rating system, written in PL/I. Learned and used proper procedures and standards needed when working on a large program (500,000 lines of code) with other programmers (50+) to avoid coding conflicts and de-implementations.Tested my coding changes to be sure they achieved the requirements. Unit tested with other programmers making changes in the code modules I worked on to verify that all worked together correctly. System tested with the entire company to assure compatibility and lack of conflict.Designed and presented for management review several small changes (3 man-months effort), including system impact and test plan.

Worked for the GEICO subsidiary Criterion Insurance Company.Gathered premium and loss data for assigned states. Analyzed the data using "incurred"​ approach. Developed filing recommendations and presented to the Underwriting Committee. Modified proposed filing based on Underwriting Committee recommendations. Filed rate changes with the states, including responding to any follow up requests the state's Department of Insurance might have.Sat for and passed several Actuarial exams.

Sligo Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Takoma Park, Md

Developed training schedule to teach a variety of skills to the campers, including Classwork (a systematic approach to camping skills from basic skills for 5th graders to advanced skills for 8th graders, and leadership skills to 9th and 10th graders), and Honors (similar to Scouting Merit Badges). Coordinated part of the curriculum with the associated elementary school's curriculum for 5th thru 8th graders. Provided instruction and support to the classwork and Honors teachers.

Under the title of Actuarial Trainee, I was the only employee looking at statistics from a mathematical perspective, so I received very little actuarial training, per se. I did, however, develop a set of questions and a perspective in looking at insurance data that helped me through my career at GEICO.Specific projects I worked on included:- Helping to apportion out medical malpractice costs across the hospitals and doctors in the Adventist Health System.- Reworking the process of apportioning medical malpractice costs to a more efficient process.- Reviewing Workers' Compensation claims- Performing an initial study of the employee medical benefits program to more fairly apportion premiums based on level of risk instead of employment counts.
