I remained the lone DevOps Resource on Capital One's Open Banking platform team.Continuing my maintenance work on our existing custom Jenkins CI/CD infrastructure, I lead a 3-year strategic initiative to move the platform to Enterprise pipelines, first containerizing the application and moving it to EC2 ECS, then migrating again to serverless Fargate ECS. In addition to satisfying several critical Enterprise OKRs, this significantly reduced monetary costs and time spent on hands-on infrastructure management and vulnerability remediation.During the initial migration process, I needed to support our existing environment along with the new environment. To do so, I had to understand the enterprise pipeline well enough to produce artifacts for both environments, something it was not originally intended to do. Where I was unable to make the new pipeline produce what I needed, I was able to communicate these gaps to the enterprise team and help advocate for their resolution. I also contributed several software features to the Python-based RDS and Fargate pipelines, reducing deployment time and fixing bugs preventing teams from onboarding.I also communicated my progress and learnings to a variety of audiences: my team to help them understand the changes I was making and how it would make development easier, our new management after my team was moved to help them understand our state, and blogposts to the general enterprise about issues I had discovered and my solutions to them. I also consulted and directly assisted other teams with their migration efforts, leading a critical regulatory application through a database upgrade and resolving several key technical OKRs they needed at one time.Outside of my team, I helped interview new candidates for Capital One and helped test new interview questions for general developers and develop questions for new DevOps candidates.

In this role, I worked to maintain and improve our custom Ansible and Jenkins configuration that provisioned our EC2 instances, handled blue/green application deployments, and managed rollback and failover. I automated some of our security scanning to help keep our application compliant, and remediated security issues as required.I helped migrate our application from MongoDB to Postgres, and took care of our performance testing and required resiliency and recovery documentation in preparation for launching the application for general consumption.

I worked with a small team to administer and maintain more than 500 Ubuntu Linux EC2 hosts for more than 50 customers. We used Chef to manage custom project-specific configurations as well as shared configs, with a focus on maintaining system stability. We also used packer to build the Amazon Machine Images we use.We also began the process of containerizing our infrastructure with Docker to help improve infrastructure flexibility and build speed.I worked closely with internal product managers and external customers to maintain and improve existing properties and launch new ones. As part of a 24x7 oncall rotation, I triaged and analyzed uptime-affecting issues, fixing them or passing my investigation to the relevant teams as appropriate.

I worked both independently and on teams to create new features and fix and improve existing features on websites developed with Perfect Sense's in-house CMS, Brightspot. I collaborated closely with internal product managers and external customers to make sure these features met and exceeded customer expectation. This work was primarily done on the Java backend and JSP view components with occasional work on CSS and Javascript.
