Supervised a team of three to manage the University's IP portfolio of over 700 patents valued at more than $600 million. Created new assessment framework and workflow to analyze disclosed technologies for commercial and legal potential. Organized financial, technical, and legal support to further develop promising early-stage innovations. Coordinated efforts for multiple functional areas: negotiation and management of licenses and sponsored research agreements, government compliance, faculty outreach, marketing and strategic alliances, and finance management.

Managed the University of Utah’s IP portfolio. Coordinated with outside counsel to file, prosecute, and maintain patents and patent applications with an annual budget of $2.7 million. Assessed disclosures from University faculty, devised and implemented strategies for legal protection. Created IP docketing protocols and established policy and procedures for managing IP in SalesForce.

Conducted comprehensive revisions to UM’s licensing agreement and research agreement templates. Devised and implemented a system for the tracking, administration, and management of UM’s patent and license portfolios. Ensured UM’s disclosure requirements complied with federal law. Generated the material for the rollout of UM’s Technology Transfer website.

Conducted prior art searches and drafted Office Actions under the supervision of a senior Supervisory Patent Examiner within art unit 1634 (nucleic acids). Received comprehensive training from the Office of Patent Quality Assurance with respect to recent court decisions applying 35 U.S.C. §101 (subject matter eligibility) and the preferred analytical framework adopted by the Patent and Trademark Office. Reviewed rejections overturned by the Patent Trial and Appeals Board under 35 U.S.C. §103; characterized the grounds and rationale for each decision and provided analysis to the Office of Patent Quality Assurance.

Oversaw daily operations of a naval installation of over 450 military and civilian personnel in the Republic of Korea. Collected and analyzed data to update operational war plans with regard to the reception, staging, and onward integration of US and UN forces during wartime scenarios. Managed $1.2 million in funding to deploy 400 personnel to the Korean peninsula in support of semi-annual military wargames. Coordinated with businesses, industry, and military personnel to arrange logistical and support services for US Navy ships to various ports throughout the Republic of Korea.

Planned, managed, and executed the ship’s voyage plan to meet all operational tasks during an eight-month deployment in support of Operation Ocean Shield, NATO’s counter-piracy effort in the Horn of Africa. Supervised and managed 21 personnel across three divisions responsible for the performance of all administrative, medical, and navigational functions. Safely navigated over 40,000 nautical miles across three oceans, including the Gibraltar and Suez transits, numerous precision anchorages, and over 100 harbor movements. Provided navigational and ship-handling training, overseeing the qualification of over 10 junior officers.

Responsible for the maintenance, operation, and function of several of the ship’s weapons and engineering systems. Coordinated and monitored repair and maintenance actions worth in excess of $500k to overhaul and upgrade various shipboard engineering systems during a nine-month dry-dock period.

Led 12 personnel through a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Headed the Naval Surface Fire Support team through three tactical surface-fire support exercises, earning the top score in Destroyer Squadron Nine.

Taught intermediate-level mathematics (algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus) to several groups of 8–10 undergraduate students in a classroom-based setting. Hand-selected to develop and implement a comprehensive revision to the teaching curriculum.

Completed graduate-level coursework across several academic disciplines related to molecular biology. Strong conceptual understanding of cell biology, genetics, and biochemistry. Mastered modern experiment design and laboratory methods, including bioinformatics, molecular cloning, gene targeting, gene knockout, and various recombinant DNA techniques.

Collected, analyzed, and interpreted biophysics data from experiments that examined the flight dynamics of birds in flight at the University of Montana’s Flight Laboratory.
